[Standard] 7-0 Metagame Challenge with Mono White Aggro. Deck Tech

Intro:
Deck performance HERE.
I wanted to share my latest modifications to my Mono White list from Zendikar standard, updated for Kaldheim. This deck has performed crazy consistently - 19-4 on the ladder, with no mulligans taken the entire time. I also went 7-0 on the standard metagame challenge on my third attempt. Basically - I think this deck is really good. It can't be overstated how helpful it is to have consistent mana on time and a low curve to allow nearly every hand to be keepable - if your opponent is even a touch slower than you then it's very hard for them to come back due to our efficiency. The best tools I feel White aggro got from Kaldheim are Usher of the Fallen (2/1 1 drops are a premium), and Reidane, which I posted a discussion on Here. I wanted to share this list before the end of the metagame challenge in case anyone else needed a 7-0 capable list. This deck still needs a little tuning - I'm not sure on the exact numbers of a couple of cards, but this is a great place to start.

The Deck:

3 Castle Ardenvale (ELD) 238
3 Giant Killer (ELD) 14

2 Lavabrink Venturer (IKO) 19

Sideboard:
2 Legion Angel (ZNR) 23

1 Sigrid, God-Favored (KHM) 29

General Gameplan:
It's an aggro deck, so the general gameplan isn't too complex. However knowing how to use each of the creature's/spells toolsets to the fullest will help you squeeze out a number of narrow victories. Due to the diversity and aggressiveness of threats, it shouldn't be difficult to get under Yorion/Ugin/Ultimatum decks. Also there are some defensive options that allow you to go over other aggressive decks. There's a few cards in here that are kind of on the weak side (Halvar, Sigrid) - but they're new so I want to give them my due dilligence.

The Creatures:
Giant Killer:
There's no way a rare Eldraine card could be bad, is there? This card is just great - we all know that by now.
Selfless Savior:
Running 3 instead of 4 because the main early game use of it is curving into our Aspirant..since Hallowblade kinda protects itself. Though there will be times you can use it for Hallowblade if it saves your tempo.
Usher of the Fallen:
In this deck, Usher is a straight up upgrade to Venerable Knight due to its boast ability. If you have a proper curve however, then play your threats out before worrying about activating boast.
Venerable Knight:
I still run a couple of this card since it's a 2/1 that can also be buffed by Aspirant to a 3-power attacker on turn 2 - even if your opponent deals with the aspirant, they'll often have to deal with this 3 power one drop very inefficiently.
Luminarch Aspirant:
Very snowbally card. Easily generates value on the turn it comes in. Often it's a better idea to spread out the counters if possible - that's what makes this card bonkers.
Seasoned Hallowblade:
Great offensive creature - though admittedly it sucks against random x/1's (beast tokens, Omen of the Sun tokens, etc.) Still a great diverse threat that can't be defeated by common doomblades.
Shepherd of the Flock:
Should likely be running 1 copy instead of 2, however I do like having at least one around as a utility spell/creature. "Usher to Safety" just puts in so much work for how cheap it is, saving your Creatures/Mauls from destruction and often just allowing you to outmaneuver your opponent's big play. Can do a bunch of other nifty tricks as a bonus.
Lavabrink Venturer:
Having built in protection is pretty good for offense and defense. Make sure you're very familiar with what spells your opponents have and also how you plan to interact with it (savior, maul, basri), before choosing odd or even.
Reidane, God of the Worthy:
I've already waxed poetic enough about this card. There are so many 4+ mana spells being played by nearly every archetype to the point that I have her in the maindeck and do not regret it. When I originally posted about her a few days ago, I was underwhelmed by her artifact side. I was careful to take a closer look at a lot of situations in games where it's relevant - and I'm now fairly impressed with it. Combat/Tempo will nearly always be in your favor once it's down, and your opponent will have much reduced mana effiency for trying to interact with you in any way besides sweepers. This card just single-handedly solves a ton of Mono Whites problems against ramp decks.
Skyclave Apparition:
Taking away an opponent's threats while adding one of your own is just insane in an aggro deck.
Halvar, God of Battle:
This card has been...ok, but sorta underwhelming and I often board it out. Though it has definitely put in work, especially in game 1 scenarios. Suddenly giving your creature with a maul on it double strike has won a few games. I've cast the equipment more than the creature. It's also decent. Vigilance is always nice and refunding your creature to hand is a nice bonus.
Legion Angel:
A great piece of top end that often gives you the gas/evasiveness you need to close out longer games. I often go for the maindeck/sideboard split of 2/2 - however I could see merits to running a 1/3 split.

The Spells:
Kabira Takedown:
We go wide enough to nearly always make this card relevant. I'd add another - but there are so many games that could go wrong if just a single one of your lands is tapped, and this is perfect as a "nice to have but don't need" land in hand.
Maul of the Skyclaves:
This card is ridiculous. Another offensive/Defensive tool.

The Sideboard:
Giant Killer: An extra for any matchups with green stuff. Remember to keep a couple in even against Yorion decks with Green in them, as they'll often try to stop you with Elder Gargaroth - don't be caught flat footed.
Soul-Guide Lantern: For anti-graveyard strats.
Drannith Magistrate: Undecided on whether to keep this card in, but decided to revisit it. Being able to slow down adventure/foretell and avoid stomp are great upsides. Can really put in work when buffed by Aspirant/Maul. He remains until I can settle on other sideboard pieces.
Glass Casket: Can be awkward...especially against anything with Green since it can interact/destroy..basically everything. However they can still buy you time if you're on the draw.
Basri Ket: I've always been high on this planeswalker - even if others aren't. At 3 mana it defeinitely does what it's designed to do in the matchups where you need it. Its ultimate often comes fast and will win you most games once you've triggered it. Great against slow decks - for now I also board him in versus Rakdos since Maul/Apparitions aren't the best there. If you can defend it before they get Kroxa out then it becomes very difficult for them to break through.
Idol of Endurance: For the Rogues matchup. If you can resolve it once they have a decent amount of your creatures milled, then this empties your graveyard and gives you an efficient way to rebuild your board.
Reidane: An extra one against any ramp/control decks.
Sigrid, God-Favored: I've cast this maybe 2 or 3 times, and never want to use it board it in...even in the matchups where you think it'd be great. Maybe if something like mono-red or the mirror is more prominent? Will likely take it out until the meta changes in its favor.
Legion Angel: No need to explain.
Baneslayer Angel: For aggro.
The best upgrade for this sideboard should probably be a couple Hushbringers. Abzan Yorion was one of my 4 losses and it felt tougher than other Yorion piles due to them depending on card advantage efficient blockers. Hushbringer could completely save these matchups. Also puts in work against Mono Green Food/Henge.
There may be space for Archon of Emeria too, as this deck doesn't double-spell often outside of the early turns.

The Matchups:
Just keep in mind how your threats align with the opponent's answers, since they will likely always have to answer what you put on board instead of vice versa. For instance, there's quite a few bounce effects in standard right now - don't go for Maul/Apparition plays in these instances as you're going to lose a ton of tempo. Go as wide as you can and sacrifice units where need be. Its aggro - Keep some one-land hands...turn some creatures sideways..and you'll be just fine.

The "Why not "X" Card?" Cards:
Resplendent Marshal: This card doesn't feel quite there for this deck - and probably isn't meant for it. I've tested him a bit and he's done some decent work when cast in the mid to late game..but doesn't do much on curve to help our gameplan.
The big question I imagine will be asked: Why not go Boros and add Skalds.
Don't get me wrong, Showdown of the Skalds is a good card. However, and this can't be stated enough, it DOES have drawbacks that players should be familiar with in certain decks. Personally, I feel that it is best used in decks that have a decent amount of haste creatures. That allows you to get very explosive and threatening turns after your untap.
I had multiple opponents tap out for Skalds (even multiple ones) in games against me, and I never once felt threatened. It lost them a gigantic amount of tempo each time and they were forced into awkward defensive positions for the rest of the game until they lost. I also wouldn't imagine wanting to use it as a "refill" card against slower decks without haste threats. Tapping out (if it resolves) on turn 4, and playing threats on turn 5 that you have to wait until turn 6 and attack with? No thanks, I'd rather just have my threats be a bit stickier. I think this card is great as a "mirror" breaker between midrange decks (again, if not running haste threats), and I've also seen it be very effective in prowess decks...however, for this deck, I don't think making the mana base worse and adding more 4-cost cards is going to help any of the matchups.
I've seen some very well performing White lists that are even more aggressive than this one running cards like Clarion Spirit and even more 1 drops to double spell. Compared to those lists this one is more "midrange" - but I think there's a lot of avenues to explore if you go that route. Going lower and wider has a ton of appeal against decks that can win by stealing your value creatures (Rogues/Claim/Akroan War decks).
Why not Snow Lands/Haven? Because I'm a fool and just started jamming games today and didn't think about it until now. They definitely could've won me the few games that I lost. I'll be switching over to the snow package and taking out the Emeria's Calls..which I've cast 1 in about 40 games. Haven would surely be more relevant than that.

Conclusion:
TL:DR - The deck has performed fantastically - to date, 19-4 on the ladder (with no mulligans) and 7-0 in Standard Metagame challenge. Great offense and defense. Maindeck/Sideboard need a little bit of optimization - but has tools for most matchups. No idea why I'm not running snow lands/Faceless Haven yet - adding them in. Looking forward to running this in online tourney soon.

EDIT:
Lots of great discussion in here! I wanted to add in some noteworthy stuff so far that's been concluded and speculated as we continue to discuss.
First off, here's what I'm going to be running for the time being, though I haven't tested much: https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/3474283#arena. Updated the mana to a snow package, added a single Lurrus instead of Halvar and updated the sideboard.
Some things that I've noted in the discussion:

Ban list a mile long (Session 2)

Session 2, one where the DM asked us all to come back just to basically catch up a new player.
Link to Session 0-1: https://www.reddit.com/rpghorrorstories/comments/klg1g4/ban_list_a_mile_long/
New information I obtained. -The DM has created an edgy Frost elf DMPC to play, who has another player as their companion, though they don't seem to want to work with us the party. -This DMPC and the player accompanying them are in a relationship in character, and any further details would make this post NSFW. -Another exotic race has been added, the beast-kin, which is pumped up shifter, and a player was allowed to be Tabaxi, probably because that player is brand new to DnD, and a girl. -The DM has outright stated that that 80k monster attack, is for if the 'gods' don't like what we're doing. -The DM apparently has 3 years of DMing experience, or so they say, having run 17 games and this mana caster system 2, this makes 3 times. (The two of us who aren't new don't believe this for a second.)
I am now only in this, as is a friend of mine, to see how this becomes more of a train wreck.
Session 2 We arrive back at the castle, que stuck up noble noises, to an event that none of us as players understand, apparently the gods are choosing a few people of each race to do trials for them, i'm the ONLY Tiefling there so I auto qualify. Obviously the other players qualify too for story reasons. This is where we learn the 'humanoid' races are racist against Tieflings, Tabaxi, Beast-kin, and Dragonborn, no explanation why. (This list means everyone currently in the party.)
After being chosen we are asked if we have equipment. (Remember in post 1 where I was told to not bring any, this becomes important.) My new Tabaxi friend quickly gives me some basic equipment because she thinks i'll get in trouble if I say I have none. All the people who didn't bring anything are taken to an arena. Que Hungergames theme song as it plays out exactly like the movies to start except. no fighting other people, you all are to survive a hoard and who lives gets to keep what they grabbed in the cornucopia (We find out that stuff in there was REALLY good equipment.) No PC is required to enter because we all have stuff. (The DM was probably trying to throw me in there because they told me to not start with equipment.)
In comes 200 undead tentacle monsters, all blind, but have extremely good hearing. (I realize why Thaumaturgy is banned now, and make an off hand comment about how the spell silence would make this super easy. The DM proceeds to add Silence to the Ban list.) Any NPC that gets caught proceeds to be maimed in vivid detail by the DM in ways that make DOOM Eternal look like its PG13. The Druid Tabaxi and I want to see if we can help, and since I have my full spell list due to the mana rules from post 1, I have Major illusion. And I attempt to make a banging suit of armor on the other side of the viewing window in order to draw some undead away from the people inside. "Your spell fails." "How so?" "The glass is sound proof, the sound does not get through." "I can see the other side of the glass I cast it on the other side." "It fails, the glass has an antimagic field over it, no magic in or out." In the most preschool smug tone he can muster, I don't think they realized they sounded like that either. After a bit the Tabaxi wants to vomit, and goes outside to scream. "Roll a Dex save." All of us: "Why?" "You might damage your vocal cords screaming." "Wouldn't that be a Con save?" "Whatever Dex or Con your pick." Mild throat ache for Tabaxi, rip. After a few in game hours, the survivors make it outside, the edgelord DMPC survives and comes out emanating EEEEEEEDGE, at this point i've had enough of him. We three go back to the inn and regroup, I try to get drunk because what I saw warrants it. "Con save." (I assume to get drunk) 7 "You vomit your drink and meal back up. "Proceeds to spend 45 mana to prestidigitation 3 times. Now we discuss a plan, we are to be given or make teams, obviously we all form a team the three of us, and will be sent into dungeons as our trials, any loot you find is yours to keep. I then make an off hand comment in character. "Alright, so all we have to do is stay alive, and hope the final trial isn't fighting each other." (The DM goes silent on me saying that, for quite a while.)
Will post again after maybe the next couple of sessions.
I feel bad for this Tabaxi because this is her first experience with DnD, i'm going to warn her.
Here is his full ban list so far. Legend lore (banned) Remove curse (fixed) Wish (fixed) Unseen servant (banned) Counterspell (banned) Healing spirit (banned) Tiny hut (banned) Heat metal (banned) Banish (banned) Thaumaturgy (banned) Powerword kill/stun/heal (banned) Guidance (banned) Mirror image (banned) Fly (fixed) Time stop (banned) Polymorph/true polymorph (banned) Revivify (banned) Divination (banned) Teleportation spells (spells that involve fast travel ) (banned) Feeblemind (banned) Simulacrum (banned) Clone (banned) Planar travel (banned) Soul cage (banned) Force wall (banned) Contagion (banned) Mind control (banned) Geas (banned) Spare the dying (banned) Find familiar (banned) Silence (banned)

I bought a PS4 at the start of 2020 and played video games a bit too much this crazy year! Here are my rankings and brief reviews of the 32 excellent games I finished this year, as well as my thoughts on patient gaming.

Introduction:

It's basically trite at this point to say this year has been challenging, but one positive out of everything is that I've been fortunate enough to have the time and funds to play a huge number of games that I've heard so much about, yet never was able to before now. I grew up on almost exclusively Nintendo games and then branched out to indie games in college I could play on my laptop, so I was more than excited when I bought the base PS4 that came bundled with God of War, Last of Us, and Horizon Zero Dawn for $200 (and I snagged Bloodborne for $15 while I was at it).
What ensued was a year of frenzied gaming-- never in any year of my life have I played games as much as I did this year. I enjoyed it, but there were also some surprising drawbacks to placing such an emphasis on gaming as a primary hobby, and I'll discuss those towards the conclusion. But man, there were some absolutely fantastic games that I played this year and I want to share my thoughts on them! Not every game I played this year was PS4, but most were.
Since literally every game I played this year was a good game, I have stratified my rankings into three overarching tiers: Best, Great, and Good. I was lucky enough to not even need a Meh tier this year. Lots of games within the same tier could probably have their orders switched, but I did my best. And all but two of these games I was patient™ on, which is a fun side note.
Disclaimer*:* These rankings reflect my personal opinions on the experience I had after finishing the game, rather than my thoughts on its overall quality as a product for everyone. There are a few rankings that are sure to ruffle some feathers-- I know that God of War, RDR2, Journey, Undertale, and Nier: Automata for example are great games, but they didn't resonate with me nearly as much as some others. So know that I appreciate them and those who hold these games so dear.
Without further ado, let's get going!

The BEST:

1. Bloodborne (PS4): Quite simply, I'm still chasing the feeling I had after playing this game for the first time. So much so you could say, that I played it 7 times this year. Never has a game enraptured me with its shocking world, brutal combat, and the best DLC I've ever played. I want to talk about Bloodborne (and all the souls games, really) constantly, learn everything about them, and play them forever.
  1. Last of Us Part II (PS4): One of two games I broke being patient™ on, I waited a couple months before diving in just to stop working to avoid spoilers. I enjoyed the first game but this absolutely blew me out of the water. On a gameplay level I couldn't believe how fluid and visceral the combat was, how immense the encounters were with countless approaches to every situation, and how fun it was to play. The narrative was challenging and forced me to grapple with the same emotions as the protagonist initially, then brilliantly the player and character on divergent emotional tracks as you become more shocked and uncomfortable with what happens. I encourage anyone who hasn't yet to play with an open mind and avoid trying to reduce the story to a single theme or message. It may not be your cup of tea, but it was mine.
3. Outer Wilds (PS4): This game feels like it was made just for me. I love space and rocket physics, I love discovery, and I love it when a game makes me feel clever. The level of wonder and curiosity I felt while playing can only be compared to what I experienced with Breath of the Wild. This game is difficult to talk about without spoilers, but if discovery and outer space get you excited, there is nothing like Outer Wilds.
  1. Dark Souls III (PS4): Yeah, I like souls games. While certainly less groundbreaking than DS1 and perhaps less atmospheric than Bloodborne, DS3 is a grand experience with, in my opinion, the best bosses in all the souls games. It's also the best souls game for experimenting with different playstyles without needing to watch 6 hours of VaatiVidya to figure out how to be a pyromancer.
  2. Control (PS4): Objectively speaking, this game might not have the same merits as the others in the "Best" category. But it sucked me in with it's completely unique visual style. It felt like a strange acid trip and I was always excited to see what was next. The powers and combat were fun even if not terribly original (and even though the gunplay wasn't too strong) but I was completely enthralled by the nonchalance of the cast amid mind blowing supernatural activity. Far from a perfect game, but give it a chance if the style seems intriguing to you!

The Great:

  1. The Last of Us Remastered (PS4): One of my most anticipated games when I picked up a PS4, having watched my friends play some of it. Though it didn't blow me away as much in 2020 as it might have in 2013, I thought it had decent gameplay, a great story, and a stunning world. The cities and post-apocalyptic environments were a pleasure to soak in, packed with detail, and well paced. Definitely a deserved classic.
  2. Horizon Zero Dawn (PS4): In a lot of ways, this game isn't good as an open world game. It doesn't do a great job of compelling you to explore and engage with all the cool stuff it has. The sidequests are kind of bad, many characters forgettable and oddly animated. But this game is this high on the list because it's just so much fun taking down machine dinosaurs. They nailed gameplay in a technically beautiful world, and actually surprised me with the quality of the main story line. Not groundbreaking, but solid and a joy to play.
  3. Death Stranding (PS4): For being one of the best games I have ever played, Death Stranding kinda sucks. I absolutely adored the premise and the world Kojima crafted, and delivering packages was really enjoyable. I loved figuring out traversal and just soaking in the graphics. I'm not one that normally cares about technical graphical showcases, but this game has made me reconsider how important graphics can be to an experience. Unfortunately, the dreadful gun mechanics, broken driving, constant NPC interjections, and the game's refusal to just end already kinda bogged it down. There's a lot here though that won me over and is an experience unlike anything I've ever played.
  4. Animal Crossing: New Horizons (Nintendo Switch): The other game on this list I was not patient™ for, since I bought it for my wife... and then got sucked in. Truth is, as a non-creative type, I just loved this game as an outlet for my creativity and expression. I loved having projects like my zen garden, my Domino's Pizza restaurant, and then getting to share them with my friends. I've heard it said something along the lines of "It wasn't the best game of 2020, but it was the game for 2020".
  5. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (PS4): Once I adjusted my expectations of what this game was and was not, it was great. While it doesn't reward open exploration as much as BoTW and Skyrim did, it simply has the best quests of any open world game I've played. Very rich environments and stories, and I even thought the gameplay was more than serviceable. It did kind of drag on by the end though. Also, disclaimer, I haven't played the DLC (sorry).
  6. Return of the Obra Dinn (Nintendo Switch): I had hoped it would blow me away in a way similar to Outer Wilds, and while it didn't quite reach the same heights for me it was great nonetheless. I loved the nautical setting, the critical thinking and deduction required, and the way it was balanced perfectly between leaving you totally on your own and confirming bits at a time. My only real complaint is that I felt the true ending didn't really reveal anything about the story I didn't already know, I guess I expected some grand reveal.
  7. Doom Eternal (PS4): White-knuckle, heart pounding, insane. The game forces you to engage with every mechanic it throws at you and is brutally challenging, but all in the best way. Though the gameplay was better than DOOM 2016, I actually preferred the latter since Eternal's levels felt more like a silly mario level than a tense demon-infested place. I get what they were going for and they executed well, I just prefer the more serious tone.
  8. Hades (Nintendo Switch): Biggest surprise of the year for me, I didn't actually expect to like it. Hades is perfectly polished and a big step forward for integrating its excellent narrative with its roguelike structure. It's very easy to play without investing too much, making it great for unwinding. It deserves all the praise it's getting.
  9. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (Remastered) (PS4): All the mainline Uncharted games are on this list but I enjoyed 2 the most. The set pieces were the most memorable, and I enjoyed almost every second. These games aren't as high on the list because, no matter how you dress it up, it's a pretty simple affair ultimately in terms of gameplay but it nails the style of game that it is.
  10. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice (PS4): An amazing game in its own right, but was ultimately disappointing for me as a From Software fan. I found that what I appreciated most about Souls games was the tension of not knowing if you could make it to the next checkpoint, the terror of encountering something surprising and having to deal with it. Sekiro litters checkpoints left and right, which is of course great for its more boss-focused design, but left me far less immersed in the environments personally. I also wished I had more options for playing aggressively rather than just memorizing the parry patterns. In any case, these gripes are my personal preferences coming through and any hardcore gamer owes it to themselves to conquer this behemoth of a challenge.
  11. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2 (PS4): Pure, unadulterated fun. I was absolutely addicted to the core gameplay and the levels, especially in the first game, were so cool to explore. For me the core loop started to get stale by the time I finished all the challenges on the levels, but for those that wanted more there is almost an endless amount of bonus challenges to tackle.
  12. Uncharted 4: A Thief's End (PS4): There's definitely a strong argument that this is the ultimate uncharted game to play-- best gunplay and options in encounters, by far the best puzzles, and the delivery of the story is leagues above the rest of the series. I simply think that Uncharted 2 had the highest highs, so 4 is a tad lower. That, and the beautiful story set up was not brought together in a satisfying way; it in no way felt like Drake had earned Elena's forgiveness, but they kind just glossed over it. Still, a must play and Naughty Dog games at their best.
  13. Subnautica (PS4): I wanted to love it more than I did. I was hooked on exploring and discovering the mysteries of the alien underwater, but I think I do better with games with less of a survival focus. I got really far into the game, but didn't actually finish since eventually the slow drip of clues started to get a bit too slow for my tastes, and the survival and basebuilding began to get tedious. Minor PS4 technical issues aside though, This is a dang good survival game, and immense in a terrifying and wonderful way.
  14. Monster Train (PC): Slay the Spire is one of my all-time favorites, so I was pretty excited to be gifted this. It's a blast as a deckbuilder, and I think it was smartly designed in how it throws significant and strong rewards at you at every phase of a run, whereas StS often forces you to make the best of an iffy situation. Had a great time, but I lost interest after 15 or so hours since most runs tend to feel fairly similar. Still would absolutely recommend for StS and deckbuilding fans.
  15. Spelunky (PC): Not the hardest game I've ever played, but definitely the most unforgiving. The controls took a while to get used to but once I was engaged, the game is a tight, slick, and enthralling adventure and test of skills. Full of secrets (I've only scratched the surface) and deeply satisfying to conquer. But boy, is it unforgiving.
  16. Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception (Remastered) (PS4): Another strong entry in the Uncharted series, just a tad weaker than 2 I think. I will credit it though with having the most memorable environments and locales in any Uncharted though!

The Good:

  1. Read Dead Redemption II (PS4): *Full disclosure, I'm still playing through act 5 at the time of this post.* This one is really tough for me to fully form an opinion on. On the one hand, I think this is the most stunning and immersive open world I've ever seen. Deeply authentic towns, regions, unparalleled attention to detail, and great characters and a decent story. But the way the missions force you to do things explicitly one way with terrible hand-holding just isn't fun to me, and makes Uncharted games feel like open-world sandboxes by comparison. There's a lot of quality here and I've enjoyed many elements, but have been disillusioned by others. NakeyJakey explains what I felt far better than I can (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MvJPKOLDSos&t=392s). Still a good time though.
  2. God of War (PS4): Like RDR2, an incredible technical achievement, for me hands down the best looking PS4 game, best voice acting, and for most people this should be towards the top of your must-play list. At its best, the characters are great, the combat is crunchy and satisfying, and the world beautiful. I just felt that for far too often the game was far from its best-- too many combat encounters didn't feel like I was a God of War but rather smacking a giant meat sack of health, so many secrets and puzzles that I just stopped caring about because finding treasure chests isn't fun when the rpg/loot elements feel so tacked on and pointless, endlessly recycled bosses... for me it was just pretty good, nothing like the game of the generation in my eyes. That said, most people don't seem too bothered by the things I found mediocre, so the sheer spectacle (looking at you world serpent!) and great moments make this well worth the price of admission!
  3. Undertale (PC): I did not play this game the way it was meant to be played, let's say that up front. It was a gift, and I played about a half an hour every month for a year and just finally finished it. I loved the music, it was charming, and I see why people love this game so much. I think it just didn't hit those highs for me and I was left with a fairly silly little 8-bit game. Which was good. I'm glad I experienced what it had to offer but didn't leave a huge mark on me.
  4. Superhot (Google Stadia): I had wanted to play this game forever but couldn't justify spending $20 on it, so I was pleased when I got a free Google Stadia kit and got to play it free! Really neat blend of stylized retro computer flavor and a fabulous central time-stop mechanic. A great 2 hour experience but tough to recommend as more than a novelty.
  5. NieR: Automata (PS4): I have made it through 1.5 playthroughs so I know I haven't gotten the full experience, but I wasn't enjoying it enough to continue. I think every game developer though should learn from the brilliance of this game-- constantly keeping the player on its toes by not confining itself by a genre and by focusing on what's fun and cool, rather than convention. Excellent music. I get the hype, and the healthy dose of existential musings was interesting... it just didn't ultimately click for me. I can't unequivocally recommend this game to everyone, but if the premise and style stand out to you, this could be your next all-time favorite game.
  6. Star Wars Battlefront II (PS4): Picked this up for free with PS Plus, and while there's not a lot here that's that special it was honestly super nice comfort food gaming. I just enjoyed shooting stuff in really cool Star Wars settings, a franchise I love. For what it was, I had a blast, minus the fact that I personally feel Jedi/heroes really kinda ruin the game for me. Unfortunately, it also is nothing more than a basic mass multiplayer battlefield game, so don't expect anything crazy.
  7. Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (Remastered) (PS4): Definitely weaker than its successors, but still a really fun romp with trope-y but effective narrative and characters, and totally serviceable gunplay. This would be much higher on the list, and I honestly had a great time with it, but man the final third of the game was really painful to play. The switch to zombies was bad, and just wasn't fun to play through.
  8. Until Dawn (PS4): I did not think I would like this game at all, I don't care for cheesy horror and definitely am not interested in interactive movies. But if you have a significant other or group of friends to play this with, it can be a great time! I played with my wife and we were honestly pretty engaged with the characters and the story was well told and had plenty of nice jump scares. There's not much game here, but for what it is it was a neat experience.
  9. Shadow of the Colossus (Remake) (PS4): There were some incredible highlights to this game like the flying colossus and the sand worm, and the scale of the encounters with the epic music has earned this game a place as a masterpiece and classic to so many gamers. The remake looks stunning and it was exciting to see what type of colossus was up next. Unfortunately, every great moment I had was accompanied by an equally frustrating moment with mediocre controls and a couple of colossus that were so bad (looking at you, little bull/lion Celosia) that made me have to put down the game for a few days. A great game let down by some dated and poor elements.
  10. Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin (PS4): Souls games are my favorites, so it pains me to put this game so low. The best areas in the game (Heide's tower, Drangleic Castle, etc) are up there with the best in the series and most of the excellent combat found in the other games is more or less present here. But I think 2/3 of the game is bogged down by drab areas that feel more like a mario level designed to kill the player more than an area that could really exist. The Iron keep was the worst offender, the area was absolutely nonsensical and like so many other areas, enemies were placed in a way designed to frustrate the player with difficulty rather than engage them with challenge. Bosses were also mostly forgettable, but I did love the Looking Glass knight and the Pursuer!
  11. Journey (PS4): Look, I'm as surprised as you that this game is on the bottom of the list. I honestly expected to love it. An artistic, beautiful marriage of environmental storytelling and unforgettable online interaction? A smooth and cathartic movement system? It has all these things, and no doubt deserves the acclaim and love it has from so many gamers. It just didn't resonate with me. Especially the ending, I felt for sure that there would be some great climax that contrasted with the struggle of the icy segment, but instead it fell a bit flat. Maybe I'll give it another try someday.

Conclusion, Gaming Patiently, and a Warning:

There you have it! I'd love to hear what surprised you in my rankings, where I'm horribly wrong, and what games you recommend I play next! Personally, I'm considering Persona 5 (though I'm not super into JRPGs), Dishonored 2 (am curious about immersive sims), and Jedi Fallen Order.
Gaming patiently is a strategy I absolutely endorse. Not only has it allowed me to form my own opinions of games independent of hype, but has allowed me to play a huge quantity of incredible games for honestly pennies. The average cost per game of everything I played this year was under $20. Now, more than ever, is an amazing time to get a PS4 and be a patient gamer, due to both the relative inexpensiveness and the sheer volume of outstanding games. I still will probably buy the big nintendo titles at launch and occasionally buy into hype, but most of the time it just isn't worth it anymore.
Finally, a friendly warning as a personal story for those of us who deeply love games and devote a lot of time to them. Like many kids, I was pretty limited by my parents growing up on what and how much I was allowed to play. I loved gaming but it was somewhat of a forbidden fruit. In college, I loved gaming and definitely played more, but still was very busy with social activities, studies, and other hobbies. Now, as a working adult with a comfortable job, I suddenly have more time and money than I have ever had in my life, and thus this giant list of games I played was created. For the first few months it was enthralling; all I wanted to do was play. Over the course of the year, however, it has become clear to me that requiring so much of my happiness and fun coming from having a game to be excited about can have some drawbacks. In the middle of a pandemic, if I'm sitting on the couch waiting for video games to make me happy and they just aren't giving me the same enjoyment that Bloodborne did when I played it for the first time, I'm just gonna be stuck there on the couch, slowly getting a bit depressed when my main source of fun isn't cutting it. So what's the point? Well, enjoy your games! Don't let anyone stop you from loving what you love. But if you start to burn out, please take care of yourself and engage in other hobbies, get outside, and keep things balanced. For me, doing so has made gaming all the sweeter.
Thanks for reading and indulging this long post!

The Shimmer Witch Fell in Love with Me and She's Insanely Jealous

“Get real, man. This whole Shimmer Witch thing is totally bogus.”
I remember saying that because it was totally bogus. At least I thought so; standing on the edge of Harrow Lake in our bare feet, toes in the water, heels on the hard clay bank, a smooth, flat stone in each of our hands. The August sun was hot on our backs but the lake was spring fed and the water was freezing. Besides, we were too old for dumb ghost stories.
If only I had known.
“Dude, c’mon!” Dale pleaded, swatting at a deer fly buzzing around his ear. “We been talking about this since third grade. This’ll probably be our last chance!”
“Yes, William,” Johnny added. “Please, humor us. This may well be the final time we share each other’s company.”
Johnny wouldn’t be starting college for a couple weeks yet, but he was already talking all fancy, calling me “William” instead of “Billy” and wanting us to call him “Johnathan.” He’d even taken to smoking a pipe. It was annoying, but kind of funny at the same time.
He was right, though. Next month, he would be off to his freshman year and Dale had signed up for the Navy. I was the only one who’d be sticking around. I’d gotten a job as a welder at Cooper Metals right out of high school. Graduated on a Thursday afternoon and started working Monday morning. Even as a nineteen year old kid, I could lay down a stack of dimes like nobody’s business, so Mr. Cooper paid me well. Most of the other guys my age were still living with their parents, flipping burgers or washing dishes. I was already renting my own apartment, a one bedroom over McKinny’s Shoe Store, and had just bought a truck. It was used but still cherry. Not a speck of rust. With Dale and Johnny both moving on, though, this would be the last time the three of us would have the chance to summon the Shimmer Witch.
Harrow Lake was up in the High Woods, a forest that covered the river bluffs overlooking our little burgh. It was the source of Bull Run, which flowed downhill and emptied into the Allegheny River on the eastern side of town. On a map, the lake was just an oblong blue blob with no name. We called it a lake because it was too big to be a pond. I have no idea where the “Harrow” part came from. There were no roads up there and, even on the hottest summer days, the spring water was too cold for swimming, so not many people bothered with the hike up to the lake. But there were places along its shore where a guy can reel in as many crappie and smallmouth bass as he can carry. I liked fishing, so Harrow Lake was on my short list of favorite spots. That’s how Dale and Johnny tricked me into going up there. They said they wanted to do some fishing. They even brought their rods and tackle boxes.
“Yeah, fishing for the Shimmer Witch,” Dale had laughed, as soon as I realized they were leading me along the trail to Beckoning Rock, a dark, angular chunk of granite that stuck up from the water’s surface about fifteen yards out. It looked kind of like a crooked finger, motioning for somebody to come closer, which, I guess, is how it got its name
According to the old campfire stories, three friends had to stand on the edge of the lake at Beckoning Rock, with their toes in the water and their heels on the bank. Each one, in turn, had to say “Shimmer Witch, Shimmer Witch, I summon thee. Come forth, come forth, choose one of three,” then skip their stone across the water three times and hit the rock. If everybody did everything right, the Shimmer Witch would come and bless one of the three with good health and long life.
“Me first,” Dale began. “Shimmer Witch, Shimmer Witch, I summon thee! Come forth, come forth, choose one of three!”
He threw his stone with a side armed flick of his wrist. It skipped three times before clacking against the Beckoning Rock and sinking.
“Yesss! Nailed it!”
Johnny shushed him before making a show of composing himself.
“Shimmer Witch, Shimmer Witch, I summon thee,” he enunciated the words as if he were reciting Shakespeare. “Come forth, come forth, choose one of three.”
Johnny threw his stone. Three skips and a clack, just like clockwork. He turned to me, bowing slightly.
I thought about flubbing it, getting the words wrong or missing the rock on purpose just to spite them for tricking me, but we’d been friends since first grade and this probably would be the last time we were all together. I didn’t want to disappoint them. Besides, if I screwed it up, they’d just keep badgering me to do it again and again until I did it right. Maybe, if I got it over with, we could do some actual fishing. What could it hurt?
A lot, as it turns out. Everything.
“Shimmer Witch, Shimmer Witch, I summon thee. Come forth, come forth, choose one of three,” I muttered, then flicked my stone at the water. It skipped three times and struck Beckoning Rock.
“Bitch’n!” Dale pumped his fist. “We did it!”
“And now what happens?” Johnny asked.
Dale shrugged. “We wait, I guess.”
“Nothing happens,” I said, maybe a little more harshly than I intended. “Seriously, guys, it’s a dumb ghost story they used to tell us in Cub Scouts. The Shimmer Witch isn’t real. Can we please just go fish--”
The hair on my arms and the back of my neck stood up. The smell of ozone prickled my nostrils. I could taste the fillings in my teeth.
“Whoa! Dig that!” Dale said, pointing at Johnny, whose fine, blonde hair stood out from his scalp. He looked like a dandelion gone to seed. And that’s when I knew.
“Get away from the water!” I shouted, jumping back as the sky split open with a deafening crack. A pressure wave slammed me into the ground. Everything went dark.
They found me wandering barefoot down the middle of Liberty Street, the main drag through town, still clutching the charred remains of my rod and reel. I have no memory of hiking down from the High Woods or the ambulance ride to the hospital. When I came around enough to speak coherently, I told the ER nurse about Dale and Johnny. She called the sheriff, who sent a couple of deputies up to Harrow Lake for a look around. They found my friends. Dale was floating face down in the lake. Johnny was lying on the shore. Both were dead and badly burned. The coroner conducted autopsies the next day. He ruled their cause of death as a lightning strike.
There hadn’t been a cloud in the sky, no sign of rain or storm.
We buried my friends. It was a small town, everybody pretty much knew everybody else, so there was a big turnout for both funerals. I got a lot of sympathy, pats on the shoulder and kind words, that sort of thing. I was too numb to really register any of it. Mr. Cooper gave me three days extra sick leave to recuperate, but I didn’t need it. Physically, I had never felt better. Even the dull ache in my shoulder, which I had thrown out pitching highschool baseball the year before, was gone. The only effect I suffered from the lightning strike was a flickering in the corner of my eye, kind of like the way heat shimmers off the asphalt at the elementary school playground on hot days. At first, it really bugged me, but the doctor said it would probably go away on its own, so I did my best to ignore it.
Two weeks later, I asked Jenny MacGregor out on a date. Jenny was working as a waitress at Carl’s Tap-N-Grill. She was smart and funny, and when she smiled her nose would crinkle in a way that made me feel a little loopy. I don’t know why I never noticed her when we were in school. Lucky for me, most of the other guys were just as dumb as I was. Carl’s was out of my way, but I’d been stopping there everyday after work, for whatever the special was and a beer, all summer long. There were definately better places to eat in town, but none of them had Jenny. I had spent weeks trying to screw up enough courage to ask her out. After what happened to Dale and Johnny, seeing how short life can be and all, I figured it was time to piss or get off the pot. If she shot me down, at least I’d have a reason to go someplace with decent food.
“Hey, listen,” I said as I settled my bill at the register. “I was thinking about going over to the Starlite this Friday night, catching that space movie everybody is talking about. If you’re not doing anything . . . “
Jenny stepped back, eyes wide, hand pressed to her chest just below her throat.
“Why Willian Andrew Thompson, the nerve of you!” she scolded. “A proper girl does not go to a drive-in with a boy on the first date!”
My mouth dropped open in shock. I stood there stupidly, holding the check and a five dollar bill in my outstretched hand. Then she grabbed me by the wrist and laughed. It sounded like music. Her nose crinkled and I felt like I had been walloped upside my head with a scented feather pillow.
“Lucky for you, I’m not a proper girl,” she giggled and winked. “Pick me up at seven?”
“Um, yeah, great!” was the best I could manage. “I’ll see you then.” With that, I headed for the door.
“Hey, Billy?” she called after me, pointing at the check and money still in my hand. “I may not be proper, but you don’t get free meals until at least the third date.”
I practically floated back to my apartment. The rest of the evening was a warm, fuzzy blur. I tried watching TV but couldn’t concentrate. Everything was a re-run anyway. All I could think about was Jenny, her musical laugh and that crinkly nose, but I did notice that flicker in the corner of my eye was gone. Things were really looking up.
The next day at work, during morning break, I heard the news. Jenny was dead. She was taking a bath before going to bed and a hair dryer fell into the tub and electrocuted her. They said the fuse never blew and the current ran through the water until it boiled. Three days later, Jenny’s parents buried their daughter. The funeral was closed casket.
The flicker was back. It was there when I woke that morning, before I’d even heard about Jenny, and that night, I had a sex dream. Of course, I’ve had sex dreams before, but never like that one. It hurt. I don’t remember any details of the dream itself, only the pain. You know the little shock of static electricity you get when you walk across a carpet and touch a door knob? It was like that, but all over my body, moving back and forth across my chest and arms, down my stomach to my--
Well, you get the idea.
Over the next couple of weeks, that flicker stayed in the corner of my eye, sometimes on the left, sometimes on the right, but always there. It almost seemed to have a form, but I could never make it out. About that same time, I started to get a weird tingling sensation in my side when I was in bed, or sometimes when I was kicked back on the couch just watching TV. It didn’t hurt, but it was uncomfortable, so I finally broke down and saw the doctor. Of course, he couldn’t find anything wrong. According to him, I was the healthiest person he’d seen in all his years of practice. He suggested, in a roundabout way, that maybe the problem might not be physical. He knew I’d been through some tough times recently and offered to prescribe me some Valium. I turned it down. I couldn’t be throwing arcs in the welding shop with my brain all fuzzed up on that crap. Like the flickering, it was something I’d just have to learn to live with.
It was around the middle of October, when I asked out Angie D’Plaza. She was up from the city, working in the accounting department at Cooper Metals. Dark haired and olive skinned, she was exotic, at least to a small town hick like me. Most of the office workers ate lunch at their desks, but Angie always came down to the breakroom. The guys toned down the rough language and off-color jokes when she was around, but it never completely went away. That didn’t seem to bother her. I guess, growing up in the city, she was used to it.
We had a few conversations in passing, then she started sitting with me at my table while she ate. Angie always seemed to mention that she hadn’t had any decent pasta since she’d moved here. People had told her Rudy’s had the best spaghetti around, but it was too fancy for a girl to eat there alone. I may not be the dullest tool in the shed, but I’m not the sharpest either. It took me a while to get the hint.
“So, you wanna go to Rudy’s with me and try the spaghetti?” I finally asked.
She laughed. Everybody in the breakroom turned to look. I felt like an idiot, misreading her signals like that.
“Yes,” she said. “I wanna go to Rudy’s with you and try the spaghetti. Maybe I can teach you how to sweet talk a girl while we’re at it. Meet me there Saturday night at eight?”
Saturday night, I arrived at Rudy’s ten minutes early, wearing the same jacket and tie that I had worn to my highschool graduation. They were the only nice clothes I had, and after the dopey way I’d asked her out, I wanted to make a better impression. Angie never showed. It was just after nine when I finally gave up. I wound up stopping at a Lawson’s on the way home for a loaf of bread, a jar of mustard, and a package of chipped ham; the perfect meal for losers that got stood up.
Monday morning, Mr Cooper came out on the floor and made the announcement. Angie had been killed in a freak accident Saturday afternoon. She’d been electrocuted by a short in her curling iron.
There was another sex dream, this one worse than before. I woke up screaming. It felt like my chest, shoulders, and groin had been set on fire. As I lay there, panting, I felt that familiar tingling sensation on my left side, the side of my bed that was empty. It was like something, or someone, was pressed up against me, snuggling me almost. In the dim light of the clock/radio on the bedside table, I could see the flicker in the lower left corner of my eye. I tried to study it while staring straight up at the ceiling. It’s hard to see something without looking directly at it, but I swear, that shimmery flicker was in the shape of a woman, curled against my side. Everything seemed to click together inside my head.
“Shimmer Witch,” I whispered.
Tiny jolts of static traced a path across my chest, up my neck, and to my lips. I could see the little blue flashes in the dark.
But that was crazy, thinking some sort of electrical witch had attached herself to me and killed any woman I took a shine to in a fit of jealous rage. Within a few days, I had myself convinced it was just my imagination. Thanksgiving changed all that. The Shimmer Witch, whatever she was, was real, and she didn’t want any other women in my life.
Mom always put on a big spread for Thanksgiving, even though it was just the three of us, her, me, and dad. There was turkey, of course, stuffing, gravy, mashed potatoes, candied yams, and a homemade pecan pie baked special for me. I’ve never cared much for pumpkin, so she always made me a pecan pie. After we ate, I went to the kitchen to help mom put up the leftovers, more to make sure she packed a drumstick in one of the Tupperware containers she was sending home with me than out of any desire to be helpful. While I was divvying up the dinner rolls, mom stopped scooping stuffing into a burp and seal container, turned to me with a tear in her eye, and wrapped me up in a bear hug.
“I’m so sorry about what happened to your friends,” she said into my shoulder. “And Jenny and that girl from work. It’s so much to go through and you’re still so young!”
She held the hug until I started shuffling my feet at the awkwardness. Then she let go, put her hands on either side of my face, and stood on her tiptoes to kiss my forehead.
I gave her my best lopsided grin. “Yeah, I love you, too, mom.”
Dad yelled for me to hurry up because the game was starting, saving me from the “you’ll always be my little boy” speech that I knew was coming next.
Two plays after the kickoff, mom came into the living room, fists on her hips, scolding us for having the TV up so loud that she couldn’t even hear herself think. It was another one of our Thanksgiving traditions. As she bent to reach for the volume knob, that flicker in the corner of my eye shot across the room and into the TV screen.
“Mom! No!” I yelled.
The screen exploded. Mom dropped to the floor, falling heavily on her backside.
“Oh, my!” she said. Then the blood came. “Oh, my!”
We spent the rest of the afternoon in the emergency room, while the doctor picked shards of glass out of her leg, dabbing the small cuts with mercurochrome and suturing the larger ones. At one point, he held up his thumb and forefinger, about half an inch apart, shaking his head.
“Missed the femoral artery by that much,” he said.
There was suspicion in my mom’s eyes when she looked at me. She tried to hide it, but I saw. Even worse, I saw fear, too.
I stayed away from women as much as I could after that. It wasn’t hard. People knew I was sweet on Jenny and it was pretty obvious to everybody in the shop I had a thing for Angie. Mom’s “accident” actually made the local paper. Girls would cross the street when they saw me coming. I was the most ineligible bachelor in the county. Nobody ever accused me of anything outright, but I could tell by the sidelong glances, by the way conversations would stop abruptly when I entered the breakroom or the coffee shop, that people suspected me of something. Even my own mother was afraid of me. Dad didn’t argue when I gave him a lame excuse for not making Christmas. I spent New Years alone in my apartment, watching Dick Clark with a six pack of Rolling Rock.
The flicker at the edge of my vision remained ever present. The tingle against my side when lying in bed or relaxing on the couch became a constant thing, and I still had those painful sex dreams at least twice a week, sometimes more. That spring, I went back to the doctor. I didn’t tell him everything, but I told him enough that he offered me another Valium script. This time I took it. It didn’t help. With no better ideas, I went to the library. Maybe I could find some information on the Shimmer Witch, some local legend or old wives tale that might give me a clue as to how to get rid of her.
I forgot Miss Evie was the librarian.
Miss Evie was probably the first fantasy of every school boy in town. I know she was mine. Buxomly built with blonde curls cascading over her shoulders, she was the fantasy of most of the men in town, too, married or otherwise. Miss Evie was seated behind her desk, slipping sign-out cards back into returned books, when I walked in. A white silk blouse struggled to contain her ample breasts. Her hair was pulled up into a loose bun with a single stray curl hanging over her forehead. A pair of reading glasses were perched on the end of her Barbie Doll nose. She smiled and nodded as I hurried past, headed for the card catalogue. It was getting on towards closing time. We were the only two people in the building.
I had gone through the SHI-SHO drawer twice, with no luck, and was working my way through WIT-WIV when she came up behind me.
“Can I help you find something?” she asked.
I spun around, almost dumping the entire drawer of cards on the floor.
“Oh, um, maybe,” I stammered. “I’m looking for, this is going to sound stupid, but I’m looking for anything on the Shimmer Witch.”
“The Shimmer Witch, huh?” Miss Evie folded her arms under her breasts and tapped a red lacquered nail on her chin. I tried to look anywhere but at her. She must have been twice my age but I still found her incredibly attractive. Her blue eyes were a sea a guy happily could drown in. “That’s a local legend and I don’t think anyone has written any books about it, but there might be a newspaper story, if I remember correctly. Follow me.”
She spun on her heel and walked away, hips swaying hypnotically. I tried not to look. God help me I tried.
She led me to a row of microfiche readers at the back of the building. I waited while she went into the storage stacks. A few minutes later, she returned with a tray of film rolls.
“Try this one,” she said, handing me a roll. “I think you’ll find what you’re looking for somewhere in the early to mid April editions of that year.” As she leaned over my shoulder to show me how to load and operate the machine, the side of her breast brushed against my cheek. I nearly moaned. All those adolescent fantasies came flooding back into my brain.
“Alrighty then. You’re all set. Take your time. I’ve got to run off a bunch of flyers for the book fair next week, so I’ll be closing up late.”
To my relief, she turned and strode away, her heels echoing on the marble floor. A moment later, I heard the hum and whir of the Xerox machine warming up. Scrolling through the microfiche, I tried to think of anything other than Miss Evie. That got easier when I found the headline.
“TWO DEAD, ONE INJURED, AFTER FREAK LIGHTNING STRIKE AT HARROW LAKE,” it read.
The article was dated April 8th, 1936, and described a shopkeeper finding a local teenager wandering down the middle of the street in a “perplexing state of confusion, muttering the words ‘Shimmer Witch.’” When he regained his senses, he told authorities that he and two friends had gone up to Harrow Lake “to test an old legend.” Searchers found the badly burned bodies of the boy’s companions, apparently killed by lightning.
As I read, I was only partially aware that the flicker was gone from the corner of my eye. I should have been paying more attention. Before I got to the part of the article where they gave the victims’ names, there was a loud pop and everything went dark.
“Hello?” I called out. “Miss Evie? I’m still in here.”
Carefully making my way through the deep shadows cast by the bookshelves, hoping Miss Evie hadn’t forgotten about me and locked me in for the night, I noticed a faint, orange glow against the tin ceiling. Coming around the corner of the children’s section, I saw Miss Evie, lying on the floor, her hand welded to the frayed, 220v power cord of the Xerox machine. All the lights were out, so the fuses must have blown, but her body still twitched from the current flowing through it. Sparks shot from the back of the copier, landing on books and loose papers. Licks of fire were already spreading across their worn spines and dry pages. There was an extinguisher hanging from a hook behind the desk. I tried to grab it, but as soon as my fingers touched the metal handle, a jolt of static electricity knocked me off my feet. Completely stunned, I sat there on the floor, as Miss Evie’s white silk blouse smouldered. Her blonde curls burst into flames. I saw those deep, blue eyes explode out of their sockets as her skin blackened and curled away from her skull. I think I might have screamed.
The fire spread unnaturally fast. I picked myself up off the floor and stumbled out the front doors. Lurching down the stone steps and halfway up the block, I flung myself into a phone booth and called the fire department. They got there fast, but not fast enough. All they could do was keep the flames from spreading to the hardware store next door.
That night I had the most brutal sex dream yet. When I woke, there were tiny burns on my chest and arms and my pubic hair had been singed down to the skin.
There was an investigation into the fire, of course. Both the fire marshal and the county sheriff had a lot of questions for me, but the evidence backed my story. And why wouldn’t it? I told them the truth. I just left out any mention of the Shimmer Witch. In my last conversation with the sheriff, he pointed out that a lot of people around me were meeting with unfortunate accidents, and that tended to make folks nervous. He suggested that a fella with my welding skills could make a good living working at one of the steel mills down in the big city. “Everybody needs a fresh start once-in-a-while,” he’d said. I took his advice.
There weren’t too many people for me to say goodbye to, but I did stop by my parents’ place on the way out of town. Dad came out to the driveway to shake my hand. He got a jolt of static for his trouble. Mom waved from the kitchen window. That hurt. I don’t blame her, but still. It was the last time I ever saw them. Both died many years later. Dad went first, mom followed not long after. I didn’t go to either funeral, but I had good reason not to.
You see, that day Dale, Johnny, and I went up to Harrow lake and summoned the Shimmer Witch was August 20th, 1977. Chronologically, I am sixty-three years old. Physically, I’m still nineteen. I have not aged a day since. I can’t die, either.
A few years after I left town, I had a bad motorcycle accident. An oncoming coal truck ran me off the road when the driver took a blind curve too wide. I hit the guard rail and went over an embankment, smashing into every tree on the way down. I wound up at the bottom of a ravine, choking on blood from a punctured lung, with my legs twisted unnaturally beneath me and a bone poking out of my forearm. The truck driver probably never saw me and, on a back road like that, nobody was going to come along anytime soon. I knew I was going to die, so I closed my eyes and waited.
When I woke, I was still covered in dirt and blood, but my legs were straight, all my bones were back on the inside, and I could breathe just fine. My bike was trashed, so I had to walk eight miles to a gas station. Other than that, I was just as fine as frog hair.
There have been times since then when I tried taking matters into my own hands. That didn’t work out so well. When I tried pills, I woke up in a pool of my own vomit. When I tried hanging myself, I woke up on the floor with frayed bits of a charred rope around my neck. When I tried a gun, I woke up with a melted lump of slag between my feet. The sex dreams after each attempt were, well . . . punishing.
It’s been forty-four years I’ve lived like this, no family, no friends, no lovers. She kills any woman I take a liking to. I’m not sure how she’d react to me having guy friends and I don’t want to find out. I’ve been completely isolated, always on the move from town to town, job to job, trying to stay ahead of the suspicious looks and whispered rumors when I never seem to age. I can’t even look at porn without her zapping me in the ‘nads as soon as I fall asleep. The Shimmer Witch wants me all to herself and she just won’t let go. This has got to end.
I think I may have found a way.
If the Shimmer Witch won’t let her chosen one go, if she won’t even let him die, what happened to the kid before me, the one from the newspaper in 1936? I’ve been doing a lot of research lately, but not all the records have been computerized. The internet was a dead end, so I had to do it the old fashioned way. I had to go back to my hometown, to the library. I was looking for obituaries from the end of August, 1977. There was a possibility the kid had moved away, just like I did, and there would be no record of him there, but people didn’t travel much in those days. It was a long shot, but what did I have to lose?
Things have changed some. Harrow Lake and Beckoning Rock are still there, but much of the High Woods are gone, cut back to make room for subdivisions, you know, the kind they name after all the trees they chopped down; Willow Grove, Maple Way, Oak Hill Estates, that sort of thing. There are plenty of roads up there now. In town, the old Lawson’s was replaced by a Sheetz and Cooper’s Metals is shuttered and empty, but Carl’s Tap-N-Grill is still there. Go figure. I stopped in for lunch, couldn’t help myself. The food is just as bad as it ever was. Rudy’s is still there, but the only thing about the place that hasn’t changed is the name. I also saw some familiar faces, old classmates and neighbors that I recognized despite their age. From the looks I was getting, a few of them thought that I looked familiar, too, so I kept my head down and avoided eye contact.
The library they’d built to replace the one that had burned down was a soulless brick and glass block, full of fluorescent lights and stain-resistant carpet, nothing like the stately sandstone castle with vaulted ceilings and marble floors that I remembered. Fortunately, the town no longer had a hot librarian. There was an older guy, balding, gray haired, and stoop shouldered, seated behind the front desk. He was Emory Dawson, according to the nameplate on the counter. I remembered little Emmy. He was two grades behind me in school. Emory showed me to the microfiche viewers, apologized for the dust, and got me the film for the June/July/August 1977 editions of the County Bugle. I assured him I knew how to operate the reader.
“Huh,” he said. “Well good for you. Not many young folks know how to work these old machines. Everybody uses computers these days, dontcha know.”
He gave me a curious look. I could tell he was dancing on the edge of recognition, so I smiled, nodded, and turned away, busying myself with loading the reader.
It took a while to find what I was looking for because it wasn’t in the obituaries. I ran across the story by accident, when my finger slipped on the scroll knob and I overshot the obits on page three and wound up on page six. The headline read, “LOCAL HERMIT AGES 40 YRS. OVERNIGHT.” It was just three paragraphs. His name was Henry Werner. He lived in a tarpaper shack near Sweet Creek, a dozen or so houses and a gas station clustered around a crossroads about five miles north of town. According to local gossip, his youthful appearance was attributed to having been struck by lightning as a teenager. Mr. Werner had refused to speak to the reporter, but another resident was quoted as saying, “Yeah, I seen Henry come into Murphy’s Garage for cigarettes. It was shocking how he got so old so fast. I asked him about it, but all he’d say is ‘damned witch finally leaved me.’”
The byline was dated Aug. 21, 1977.
It seems the Shimmer Witch won’t let me go until she chooses another, so if you’re feeling froggy, you go right ahead and jump. I won’t mind. I’m not going to tell you where Harrow Lake is, that would make me complicite and I’d rather not have that on my conscience, but if you do some poking around, you’ll find it. I’ve left enough clues. Take two friends. Stand with your toes in the water and your heels on the bank. Say the words and skip your stones. Make sure they hit Beckoning Rock.
C’mon, must be somebody out there who wants to be immortal.

[Share] My Music Library Index (861GB)

Hello everyone. I made a post about two months ago sharing my library index (646GB at the time). I was working with 400GB of space back then so I went with a request format so people could comment and request titles on my list. However, I have since exceeded that storage space limit through the sheer number of requests I've been getting so I decided to purchase more space to accommodate everyone's needs. As a result, I now have enough space to upload my entire library which is what I have done. Please enjoy!

aHR0cHM6Ly9tZWdhLm56L2ZvbGRlci96bDBtR1FDUSN3S21ORzVlUmdDVmxSeC0wUTlFQS1R

*This keeps coming up on my last post, so I will reiterate it here:
This is not a request post. I'm sharing what I have in my library. Please do not request titles that aren't listed below. Thank you. :)

If there's no quality specified, it's FLAC at 16bit / 44.1 or 48 kHz
[320] MP3 at 320kbps, when this number is 3 digits and not 16/24 it is always MP3 with the number indicating kbps
[24] FLAC at 24 bit, if the sampling rate is higher than 44.1/48kHz it will be specified
[MQA] will be specified after bit-rate
Discographies are studio albums mostly, some include EPs/Mixtapes/Live albums as well
All albums listed are complete, unless otherwise noted.
If there are multiple formats available within an album, they will be in separate sub folders.
Occasionally there will be albums with mixed formats, which will be noted.
There's a small percentage of titles that are labeled in FLAC but are actually upsampled MP3. Unfortunately I'm not quite sure which ones they are. I'd estimate this to be less than 3% of the collection.
Some video content are also included with certain titles.
I think that would be all for now. Please let me know if you have any concerns or questions below.

WotV PvP Tactics & Mentality - Class Match 4 (CM4) Meta Preview

WotV PvP Tactics & Mentality - Class Match 4 (CM4) Meta Preview

TL;DR: With Quicken banned and Healing Nerfed, CM4 is going to dramatically rock the live PvP meta. Every match will be a chess match of positioning and careful action planning. This will either be rage inducing or incredibly fun... Or Both!

Snowfield is going to induce rage for the unprepared and prepared alike!

Hello All -
Welcome to the latest CM meta preview! Unlike CM3 which was a total sleeper in terms of meta shake-ups, CM4 comes with a new meta unit for live PvP (Niv'Lu) as well as an aggressive new rule set:

  • No Direct CT Manipulation: Quicken, Robb's TMR, Ildyra's LB, etc. all will not work - CT up or down will have NO effect!
  • Heals are *greatly* reduced - generally by 90% - due to how healing mechanics work.
  • The Cost limit is very permissive, at 540 total cost for a team of three.

I think CM4 is going to be a tale of two games. In bronze/silver there's going to be tons of Niv/Freds as well as evade teams on auto killing everyone. I imagine the game will feel super unbalanced at this level to the point of complete frustration. But at Diamond Master - and I'm writing this post for my fellow Diamond Masters or those that aspire to join our crew - I predict this will be the most open and balanced CM ever. There are 15 or 20 viable units across several team flavors and they're all going to be competitive. Quicken and map design really compressed the meta in the past but with no quickens, no heals, and a map with lots of verticality in it? There's going to be a ton of different comps battling for domination and I'm excited/terrified!

As usual for these posts, I will summarize some general CM notes (skip these if you're a CM vet), explain the new CM map, highlight some units I expect to be making waves in CM4, go through the meta team comps you can expect to see out there, and then finally highlight some low cost but high value espers and VCs you might want to consider. Please skip around accordingly!

A few reminders about Class Match

  • CM goes for *eight* days, not seven. There are five matches possible per day, for a total of 40 matches. Failure to fight any number of matches is not considered a draw or loss - win streaks are maintained - but the opportunity to win those matches is forfeited.

  • For every new CM you start with a baseline of points based on the tier you finished at in the prior CM. Due to this head start your objective if you're starting new should be to get into a higher tier than you did in the past CMs to start at an even stronger position for the next one.

  • The way you climb the ladder in CM is by stitching long win streaks together. In CM1 the matchmaker (MM) was completely random so the top ten players were all 39-1 or 38-2. Since then MM generally tries to match players with similar tiers together - so Diamond Masters face other Diamond Masters - but the MM can match anyone to anyone depending on some dark arts that we're not fully aware of. Due to this expect the top 10 players to go 35-5 or so. It's better to lose your first 5 games and win the next 35 than to mix and match Ws and Ls!

  • CM has three time slots and the live PvP community can't determine if any are better or worse as players spent CM2 trying to game out weakest opposition based on CM1 observations and totally muddied up the waters.

The Map - Snowfield

I haven't done this in previous CM posts but after doing a bunch of testing with the Live PvP Community I think this map is unique enough that it deserves some specific discussion. Snowfield is a map that we've seen in Arena for a couple weeks but I think it's setup is so complex and interesting that it deserves some investigation. Firstly, a picture from JP showing where AP Crystals were placed:
AP Crystals are huge given how AP hungry units are probably going to be in CM4

Secondly, Snowfield is defined by its trenches and hills, which run across the map on both sides with a flat bridge in the middle. Due to this structure, units with Jump 1 can only advance to the enemy team along a single side of the map. Units with Jump 2 or 3 can leap the walls and approach from anywhere:
Move 3, Jump1 teams - beware!!!
For reference, I call the approach lane in red the 'low' lane and the approach lane in yellow the 'high' lane. Given this structure, jump 1 brawlebruiser units like Agrias have to take the long way around, whereas dragoons (and the new missile unit, Niv'lu) can just hop right across the map. This has *huge* tactical implications which I will get into as I breakdown the various meta teams you can expect to see in CM4.
In addition, all these height differentials are going to wreck havoc for units that have height issues, such as Cid or traditional gunner abilities. I can promise you that you will be saving or losing at least two or three matches simply by standing a unit up on a height 2, 3, or even 4 square in a timely moment!

Noteworthy Characters in the Current Live PvP Meta

(thanks to wotv-calc.com for the screenshots!)

Niv'lu

Get used to this face, you're going to be seeing a lot of her
Of all the unit releases in the past four weeks, Niv'Lu was the most anticipated by the Live PvP community, with good reason. Niv'Lu's primary kit includes a veritable cornucopia of debilitating attacks, including a new-to-the-game MOVE -1 debuff, a hard hitting AoE dispel, a physical barrier breaker, and an AGI debuff attack. Her secondary kit is either Time Mage - purely for Haste in this CM - or her own Sniper sub which adds disable and paralyze status effects to her bag of tricks. Her Passives give you range +3 and her LB can break up to 35 def while dropping damage over a wide AoE. Oh and she's now the fastest unit in the game - and will remain so until EX jobs come out.
Another way to realize how great Niv'Lu is is to compare her to Frederika. Fred has been a meta PvP unit - and always in the conversation for best live PvP unit overall - since week 2 when she was released and the primary reason for this is a combination of three factors: a hard hitting AoE attack, massive range, and top tier speed. (Reflex is, truly, icing on the cake.) Niv checks all those boxes - although her massive AoE attack is single use - but she also adds Def Pen/Break, Batman's utility belt of abilities, and she can act as a time mage to support her partners. Simply gross!
To make matters worse, this map is a Niv'Lu playground. She is innately Jump 2 which means she can play in the High and Low sides of the map and with Slow Arrow she can turn a Move 3, Jump 1 unit into a Move 2, Jump 1 boat anchor. Judging by how many of us pulled her in the Live PvP discord, Niv'Lu is going to be *everywhere* in Diamond Master.

Kain

It took me a long time to see Kain's value in Live
Kain is a unit I've slept on initially but he was a force in CM3 and I expect to see him and his Dragoon buddies running all over CM4. With Jump 4 Kain can treat the entire map as being flat, and in Paladin sub he can run immortal spirit / sentinel on the approach to brush off incoming arrows and live long enough to do some serious damage to the enemy. He's innately accurate so has good chances against evade units as well.
With Kain you have a fast moving, wide ranging bruiser who can take a hit and deal plenty of damage, particularly with maxed VC support in the form of Demon's Wall. Underestimate the rapidity of his approach and the damage he can do on arrival at your peril!
Be careful though - if kain doesn't have sentinel enabled he doesn't have crazy high DEF and can generally be killed from 2 or 3 incoming missile attacks.

Kilphe

My surprise pick for CM4
Kilphe has heals and starts out at Move 3 / Jump 1. What is she doing on this list? Let me list the ways:
  • Esuna *will* save some matches - all the meta teams have at least one status effect and most of them have several.
  • Guaranteed hit attacks if Evade teams make their presence known.
  • She's EARTH and has high DEF - if you're seeing Fred/Niv every other match Kilphe is exactly the unit that can slow walk across the map soaking hits along the way. Seriously, Fred barrages will land for 300 or 400 on Kilphe if you tank her with proper VC support!
  • Did I mention that Kilphe can one shot Fred or Niv with Holy, even without Ramuh/Trousseau/etc.? Remember that units do bonus damage to their elemental opposites, even when you're making an attack that's of a different element type. (In other words, the Earth unit Kilphe does bonus damage to Lightning units even with Holy.)
  • In her support Kit Kilphe has move +1/Jump +1 which is NOT cancelled by Niv's slow arrow - the move buff/debuffs offset (This is unlike slow/haste which cancel one another). This will be important to giving Kilphe map flexibility and closing distance on the attack.
You don't need heals when it takes an 8 or 10 or more chain to kill you and you can one shot the opponent! Just watch out for teams with Lu'Cia - she will not take kindly to you!

Viktora

Will Viktora finally get a chance to shine?
Remember how everyone said at launch to not pull hard for Sterne, since Cid was going to overshadow him in a few weeks? Viktora unfortunately had a similar treatment with the community looking forward to Glaciala. To make things worse for live PvP, Charm was 'patched' (more likely: bugged) when ability disable for AI came out - we locked all our units to only execute self buffs or normal attacks while charmed - and this completely blunted the value of Viktora's crazy long ranged LB. This is a real shame since Viktora has an interesting kit mixing Dragoon and Thief roles but beyond some niche use here and there Vitkora has never had a chance to shine as a leading lady.
CM4 may be Viktora's opportunity. With her Thief Lore sub on, Viktora is Move 4 / Jump 4 and if she subs into Dragoon she gets another +1/+1 so that's Move 5 / Jump 5 - Viktora will be able to move at will around the map. Charm has been 'fixed' so charmed units will spend all the AP they can in the most fiendish ways imaginable to hurt their own team. Admittedly, her LB is tricky to use as it fires only on diagonals and has AOE Height of only 1. But realize that a diagonal of 'only three' corresponds to a threat range of SIX and her LB will land essentially guaranteed charm on a plethora of meta units. This LB can and will win matches all on its own - just make sure to pick up an AP crystal on the way in and pop zombie transformation or jump into the air for as long as possible to make sure you have the AP to cast it and survive long enough to do so!
Outside of the LB Viktora can hit hard with her jumps but not as hard as Kain or Glaciala (who won't be around due to the lightning units) so she can contribute a bit more than just the LB. Contrasted with Xiza she gets only 1 charm but at longer range and with a faster ability to close to distance. She also hits harder after the LB is spent.
Against evade teams Viktora won't be particularly effective outside of a single ability: sneak attack. I actually forgot about this one and had to be reminded after this post went live but sneak attack is a guaranteed hit from behind. It's only range height 1 so if Vinera puts her back to a wall you won't be able to use it but do remember its in Viktora's kit; it could bail you out at exactly the right moment!

Vinera

Better than RK Sterne for CM4!

Overshadowed in evade comps by the power of RK Sterne and the utility of HLL, CM4 is going to be Vinera's chance to lead Evade formations. Put on her Thief Lore passive and she's Move 5 / Jump 2 coupled with the highest innate evade potential in the game. If opponents don't have a way to deal with Evade she can single handedly clean up them up (particularly with heals being nerfed). Vinera is going to be nightmare inducing to brawler teams - she's hard to hit, breaks DEF, and her LB does 25% poison damage per turn for three turns. Remember - no heals this CM!
One criminally underutilized Vinera ability is Sieze AP, off her own Assassin sub. Stealing AP from your opponent achieves two valuable actions at the same time - it refills your own AP while relegating your opponent to a TP skill or a basic attack on their next turn. I know lots of people like to put her in Dual Gunner and I expect to see some teams running Niv/Vinera/XXX with Fred's Dream but seriously, Seize AP - try it and you'll see why it can be a huge game changer!
Of course, if you spawn against Fred/Niv/Lu'Cia or Rosa it's going to be a tough match, even with re-rez or missile resists stacked on. Given the arrival of Niv and the maps bias towards gunners I expect Evade to get the short end of the stick in CM4 but if, for whatever reason, the meta shifts away from Fred/Lu'Cia/Rosa then Vinera's value would most directly benefit.

Value for the Money VCs/Espers

I've retired Leonis Castle - its now the Memorial/Lifetime Value for Money VC
With 540 Cost you don't need to cut corners with your team formations unless you want to run Gilg/RK Sterne/etc., but just in case you're having trouble fitting into 540 cost here's two suggestions to look at:

Bomb

Maybe, just maybe...
For ten months the only SR esper considered worthwhile at all has been Cactuar. But in the missile heavy CM4, Bomb might finally be worth your consideration. Why? 15 Man eater, 7 Missile Resist, and 20 ATK or 10 Pierce ATK and 2 ATK. Might just be the answer if you need to save 10 cost or don't have Red Chocobo who can give you missile resists with a ton more speed. At 11 AGI bomb is slooooow but, hey, *somebody* in CM4 is going to be using him!

Ochu

Yes, you probably don't have Ochu Rez
Look, I know, you don't have Ochu resonance built up and he's brutally slow. I get it. But if Fred/Niv become omnipresent in the meta - like 80% or more of your matches - Ochu might actually make sense. Couple his innate 5% lightning resist with another 15 on his board and that gets you 20% bonus lightning resist. Toss on 10 points of lightning killer and splash on some ACC and...

Meta Team Categories and Examples

With quicken being banned, I believe CM4 is going to have some stark team composition choices. While I'm sure folks will bring all sorts of hybrids and combinations, most teams are going to fall into one of four categories: Missile teams, Dragoons, Evade, and Bruisers/Brawlers.
Given those teams, I predict the CM4 meta circle of death looking something like:
Missile -> Evade -> Brawlers -> Missile X-Factor: *** Dragoons ***
In other words, Missile teams have the advantage over evade teams, who have an advantage over brawler teams, who have the advantage over missile teams. In reality, it's not that simple - in particular, Missile vs. Brawler is going to be the defining competition within CM4 - but I think that is a good rough way to think about how the meta teams are going to fall out.
Dragoons are the X-Factor in my categorization scheme. If you build a dragoon team with XMach it can look more like missile meta teams but if you build around thancred it's a brawler team (Kain will be everywhere)!

The Missile teams formerly known as Gunners

Missilers doesn't have the same ring as Gunners, does it?
WotV Calc Link

  • How do I Kill the Enemy: Deal the strongest Missile damage possible to off out of position or weak units at maximum range.
  • How do I Survive Long Enough: Kill the enemy before they can close to deal any damage. Use Niv's Utility Kit to slow their approach and speed up my own team. If the enemy can close, try to force them into making poor trades. If all else fails, pray for Reflex.

Core Unit(s): Niv'lu, Fred
Support Unit(s): Lu'Cia, Rosa, there should be XMach but not many have her, possibly Luartha, Mustadio
I'm not saying that Missile teams are going to have the highest average win total when the dust settles on CM4, but they are going to be driving the meta. Niv'Lu is a shot in the arm to Missile teams everywhere (So much so that I'm not calling them Gunner teams anymore!) and the map favors the discerning missiler who has mastered their positional and CT game.
In general missile teams are built around Fred (and now Niv): solid AoE damage in the form of Barrage or Niv's LB attached to the longest range and highest AGI units in the game. Xiza's Bells are all but essential here - your Fred pops bells, typically as the first move of the game, then you see what your opponent does. In CM4 AP crystals will be huge as you only have one copy of bells - Niv'Lu is going to be almost as AP hungry as Fred.
If the enemy team charges you - they usually do - start shooting right away. If you see any Move 3 / Jump 1 units stuck behind/around a wall Slow Arrow them immediately and force the opponent to stall their advance or split up their team - generally a win condition for the missile team. If they turtle then you cast Aimed Fire and take advantage of Fred and Niv's high AGI and maximum range to play the positional battle and punish any positional mistakes your opponent makes.
It's very common to couple Fred with a quicken source - I used Miranda in CM1, Phoebe in CM2, and now Chel for CM3 as a double barrage is fatal to the majority of teams. Lu'Cia is becoming less common as a supporting unit for various reasons but having a second sharpshoot source in the evade meta is very useful.
There's some real options in that third missile slot in CM4. Lu'Cia is the natural pick if folks start stacking Earth units like Kilphe, Kitone, or HRairyu as she hard counters them. If earth stays quiet, Rosa also gives you guaranteed hit coupled with greater range. Luartha and Mustadio are true gunners and probably won't be seen as much due to sight lines and height issues but anything is possible. XMach is amazing but rare.
One more thing: assuming you get charged (you will be) you want to kill Dragoons/Thieves who attack immediately on the 'high' approach lane and, depending on team comps/setup, ignore Move 3 / Jump 1 brawlers on the low approach or Slow Arrow them to Move 2 / Jump 1. If someone puts a Jump 1 unit behind the wall on the 'high' approach side assume they have a Jump buff off a TMR or laugh - you're going to win!
Remember that you want to pick apart the enemy if they split into attacking across both lanes - punish them by killing their most isolated unit out of response range from the rest of the team. If they stay tightly bunched together, drop Niv's LB on the whole pod and then stack barrages on - hopefully they don't have THAT much missile resist on, right? Alternatively - dispense status effects to buy time.
If you're outside of Diamond Master you'll probably clean the clocks of other teams on this map. In Diamond Master? Every battle will be even more of a grind than it usually is - folks know this team is coming and will be prepared.

Evasion

Xiza is actually a poor dodge unit but Charm is so much fun
Wotv-Calc Link

  • How do I Kill the Enemy: Deal moderate Slash damage against the weakest or most out of position units. Strike or Missile damage is *possible* but atypical.
  • How do I Survive Long Enough: Dodge the enemy's attacks more than they dodge mine!

The premise of Evasion teams is to stack up as much LUCK, AGI, and direct Evasion as possible to cause unprepared opponents to swing and miss. As discussed, Vinera will be leading the charge this time. I think throwing Xiza in is an interesting idea. Xiza can't evade that well but she's a guaranteed way to draw attention so kit Xiza for max effective HP, not evade and try to bait the enemy into shooting at her. In the meantime, Vinera closes and uses her LB and/or sieze AP. You want to try and overwhelm whatever guaranteed hits the other team has - if you can take out Fred before she sharpshoots you to death you have a chance!
I think RK sterne is really held back by being Move 3 / Jump 1- I just don't know how he can close across snowfield in time. Lasswell is interesting, however, because of how awesome mirage is - the enemy has to hit you to take mirage off so it's going to be drawing guaranteed hit attacks at some point.
HLL is a non-factor because she doesn't have holy and heals are useless.
Unfortunately, Evade teams are most likely to suffer at the hands of the CM4 meta. They always have a problem with teams that can stack in lots of high speed guaranteed hits and we're almost certainly going to be seeing lots of that. If the Missile / Brawler fight gets ugly to the point where folks are starting to sleep on guaranteed hit (i.e., missile teams put lu'cia to the bench to sub in some more utility against bruisers) then the window for evade will open. I don't know if they will be able to step through it.

Brawlers

I ran out of room but Whisper might - might! - actually make an appearance as well.
Wotv Calc Link

  • How do I Kill the Enemy: March towards the enemy as a unit and deal a mix of strong damage types - Slash being the most the common. Grind the enemy down, focusing on healers first where possible.
  • How do I Survive Long Enough: Be able to absorb enough hits in a row that you can close to the enemy and kill them.

Core Unit(s): Agrias, Thancred, HRairyu, Duane
Support Unit(s): Kilphe
The premise of the bruisebrawler team is to combine units with high effective HP with support units that can sustain them long enough to kill the enemy team. I originally thought Bruisers were going to SUCK for CM4 - no heals! - but in testing they're surprisingly durable. The key is to keep sentinel or other effects active as you slow march across the map.
I think the keys for CM4 will be to bring an esuna or similar source to clear status effects, having sentinel and other protections up, and a steady hand that always approaches the enemy. Niv is going to create havoc between her dispel and slow arrows but by careful positioning you CAN outlast the onslaught.
If missile teams really have you down, you can get Thancred to 100% missile resists. Kilphe is great for this time, not just for esuna, but for holy as well to check evade teams. Agrias is *STILL* good - the ability to confuse enemies from 5 tiles away will define how the other team approaches you - consider putting a move/jump buff on Agrias if you can! HRairyu's value comes from his earth element - he can one shot the lightning girls in many situations. Duane is tough and can AoE disable as well as break re-rez - a very viable option if you have him.

Dragoons

Obvious overlap with brawlers - Dragoons are really a subset?

  • How do I Kill the Enemy: Kill the enemy through the air with powerful pierce attacks.
  • How do I Survive Long Enough: Use Level 1 jumps, re-rez abilities, or sentinel / high defense to close safely to the enemy.

Core Unit(s): Kain, Duane, Thancred
Support Unit(s): Viktora, Xmach
I really like the *idea* of Dragoons because of their X-Factor. Depending their exact composition Dragoons can range from tough brawlers to fast glass cannons. Consider Kain/Duane/Thrancred - this team mixes high damage with high defenses and survivability and is functionally very similar to a slash team built around Agrias, Cid, etc. On the other hand, you could run Kain/Viktora/XMach which would be more like a missile team in terms of low HP, high AGI, and powerful long ranged effects.
One sneaky strategy the Live PvP community has been playing around with is taking advantage of the cast time of the basic Jump ability. Almost no dragoon that has 'Jump' ever uses it in favor or more powerful/longer range jumps. 'Jump' also has the longest cast time of all the jump abilities. If you happen to have Jump at level 1 - great, you can use this strat. The idea is, haste a fast dragoon like Viktora, then run towards the enemy and use your level 1 Jump - target whatever square you want. While you are in the air two important things are happening: you're still gaining CT and nobody can hurt you. This is *super* niche but its a nice, tricky tool to have in the kit - if you can be in the air during your opponent's turns you can close the distance to them uncontested!
Dragoon teams are going to key off Kain. He hits hard, and can Sentinel his way across the map. If you couple him with Viktora you're going to be able to get hits in - the enemy team will be drawn to Viktora unless you completely YOLO Kain. Carefully position so that Kain threatens the enemy with Viktora stalking just outside threat range - try to draw their fire and sneak that charm in! Alternatively, there are some YOLO charm strats for Viktora - just run to an AP crystal, stay alive for one turn, charm!
Outside Kain, Thancred might be seen for the first time in live PvP since week 1/2. He's TOUGH against missile. He can't close quickly but if you want to run a brawler dragoon team he's a great choice. Similar story with Duane except Duane synergizes better with Kain and deals more damage.
XMach is an interesting play that we probably won't see much of. She wasn't pulled for heavily but she gives you guaranteed hit and reflex on top of her base dragoon package. She's not as tough as kain but isn't glass either. If evade actually becomes a thing her + kain will have a good chance of beating Evade but if missiles dominate Xmach will be outgunned by Fred/Niv/etc.

Bonus Section

As a reward if you stuck around this long, I wanted to quickly mention a couple pivot points in the meta that may creep up over the next eight days:

  • The central battle may come down to missile teams versus bruiser teams. The more missile teams there are, the more it makes sense to completely stack missile resists while neglecting other damage types. Even without heals it IS possible to tank missile damage long enough to close and kill missile teams.
  • The more evade there is, the more missile units want to run Fred/Niv/Rosa or Lu'Cia for guaranteed hits, but if evade is non-existent then Lu'Cia/Rosa will tend to head to the bench and Kitone (for stop and haste) , Viktora (Charm), or other status effect units make sense to sub in to fight back against the bruiser teams trying to tank out only missile resists. On the other side of the coin, the more evade, the harder it is for brawlers to establish themselves and the more they need to build around Kilphe, which then feeds back into missile teams subbing in Lu'Cia, which hurts Evade, which...
  • I can't predict where Kain and the rest of the Dragoons will take the meta, if anywhere. Kain has a lot of ACC so they have a chance against evade but can they beat missile teams? Even with all the gimmicks in the book it will be tough to close and kill gunners. I can't imagine dragoons being so dominant that brawlers have to think about kitting for pierce resist instead of missile but if it happens Missile teams would be the clear winners!

Well that's it for this post, I hope you found it useful! 120 Sequels, Series Books, and Shared World Stories for 2021!

As 2020 comes to a close (to much rejoicing, by me at least), it's time to look forward to the coming year! To that effect, here are 120 books to look forward to in 2021, all of them sequels or books taking place in pre-existing universes (some of them might still be readable as standalones though!). Audio Drama/Fiction/RPG Debuts - January 2021

I've got what I think is a mostly exhaustive list of the new audio drama series that came out in January, which may be of interest to those looking for new shows. See below. Anyone want to tell me any I've missed, and I'll update it? (Note, "new" here means that the Ep1 of the RSS feed was released, or a previously non-fiction feed started producing fiction.) Listened to any of them that you would recommend?
Previous months are available here:

In fact, they're only here for Sharp. The first sentient artificial life form created on Earth. It turns out subjugating a juvenile artificial entity into spamming twitter and reddit with ads and tracking online behavior for marketing purposes is a violation of the Consortium's ethics code. This particular human error is worthy of breaking the universal mandated silent treatment. But even if our local galaxy republic has determined humans are a danger to avoid, that won't stop Sharp from taking us with her on an epic imaginary voyage. Several of her human travel companions are physically injured by the technology used for space travel. Some suffer uncomfortable but transitory side effects. Others experience memory loss or severe physical harm. With no expedient way home to Earth the humans and Sharp's alien guardian are forced to solve their shared circumstances. A crew of hostile amnesiacs, fretful volunteers, malcontent denizens, and disquieted space tourists are forced to continue deeper into space on a journey that ultimately confronts loss, change, and recovery. And many a 'human' error.
