An American Asks, Why is My Country's Perception of you So Wrong?
As a gringo American growing up comfortably in NYC, I took my first trip to Mexico a year and a half ago despite serious fears from my family and not knowing any Spanish (now I am not awful). A year later I have been to Cabos, La Paz, Culiacan, Mazatlan, Tepic, Guadalajara, Puerto Vallarta, Morelia, Queretaro, Ciudad Hidalgo, Ciudad Mantes, Mexico City, Durango, Torreon, Monterrey, Aguascalientes, Leon, Guanajuanto, San Miguel Allende, Cuernavacas, Tequila, San Luis Potosi and some others I can't think of. Initially I was so scared to go and feared the comfort factor, the US Media makes Mexico seem so third world. But its not at all. Everything is cheaper, yes, but I read a satistic in the Economist that said Mexico was only 10% less middle class than the USA. There are malls everywhere, movies, bars, industry, tourism, universities, popular and successful sports team including soccer and baseball, media industry, hotels, exclusive neighborhoods, casinos, theaters, nightlife, etc. Everyone is extremely kind and I have wondered alone many times by myself at all hours the night to explore the cities I stay in, and I have felt more safe here than doing that in cities I've been before like Cleveland and Detroit. The women are far more modern and only somewhat more religiously conservative than the US, and I've even had some wonderful, meaningful romances with girls I've met off of Tinder, which my American friends are always surprised exists in Mexico. I always feel that the Mexico is far more North American than it is Latin American. So why this perception that Mexico is so dirty and poor (using their feelings as the pejorative term, not mine)? Its not shared by others in the world. There is an abundance of Canadian tourists and Germans as well. So why America? Do they view Juarez and Tijuana, because they are the closest, as the general picture of Mexico? Or is there a part I'm not seeing? I have only really seen the center of the country, is the south far less well off and perhaps more dangerous? Planning on going down to Yucatan from Mexico City south next trip.
