Lockdown 3.0 Things to do, plus help and support.

Disclaimer I want to thank everyone for the gilds, replies and suggestions. I just do not have time to reply to everyone, but I am reading everything. I am not sure how much bigger the thread can be, I already typed this but it vanished so I think I'm at the limit. I will try to keep updating, but I don't expect the thread to be up top for much longer and will likely vanish soon, so if you need anything save it.
Yes, it's hard, it sucks, it's depressing. It is something we all have to do if you want to see this virus go. Everyone knows the deal, too many think they're the exception but no one is. However, staying home is hard so maybe I can help at least one or two people with some incentives. I'll try to give links to some things that can help cure the boredom, and some support if you need it.
Most of this might be obvious to some, some might not even have internet and of course, money is a big issue, so I'll try to give some suggestions:
For streaming and on demand things such as Netflix et al, don't forget you can subscribe for free for your first month. This goes for most things in the list. If you are worried about putting in your payment details and forgetting to cancel a month later, don't worry! You can sign up and immediately cancel and you still get your free month!
For people who don't have a smart TV, you can buy a cheap Amazon Fire TV stick or a Roku box. The Fire stick can go as low as £20 often for 1080p. It will drop to £30 for 4k.
I picked up a 4k Roku device for £18 on Amazon once. It's fast and snappy. currently it's going for £33 for the 4k version. Having both, there is little difference between the devices. NowTV also do their own roku powered device.
Subscription based streaming sites that all offer 2-4 weeks free for first timers
  • Netflix *According to comments the second month is free.
  • Amazon Prime You can either get Amazon video on its own, or take prime with other benefits. I strongly urge those who use Amazon for buying off their store front to use [https://smile.amazon.co.uk/] as there is literally no difference except everything you buy amazon donates to a charity of your choice.
  • Now TV (I believe it's 7 days)
  • Disney+
  • Britbox
  • Amazon channels. I believe you can get all these individually but Amazon offers them as channels bound to your prime account, and they are again either free for a couple weeks (again, take them, cancel instantly) or very cheap. I recently subscribed to Starzplay for £1 for 3 months. It has some good shows on it like Fringe, doom patrol. It also has channels like Curiosity stream and shudder
If you have not subscribed to the any of the above, you can get a few months of free TV by signing up and cancelling instantly. I suggest waiting at least 5 minutes just to let it go through the system.
Some tips for Now TV. IF you already have a subscription, I've noticed you can get it cheaper by cancelling. When you cancel they will beg you to stay. Select "I can not afford it this month" and they should beg again, telling you what shows they have. If you say you still want to cancel, they'll beg one last time and offer you the subscription for cheaper. This won't work every month, but I've noticed they'll always offer it the first time, then again after a couple months. If you're subscribed to both films and entertainment do the most expensive one as it may not work both times (but it might!). You can also pick up passes from storefronts a lot cheaper sometimes, before I could pick one up on Amazon for £3 but, they seem to have cracked down on it. If you shop around (or if anyone knows of a legitimate store please let me know) you might be able to pick it up cheaper. Lastly, check their website and under your account they should have an "offers for you" section.
Completely free TV
If you do have a smart TV and/or device, there are some good free streaming apps. One I really love is called PlutoTV. I know this is on both Roku and the fire stick, as well as Ps4/Ps5 and xbox.
Pluto offers a bunch of live channels and now an on demand section, all for free. It has adverts but they are actually short (shorter than regular TV and fewer of them). Some of the channels are just streaming certain shows like Mythbusters 24/7 or Dog the bounty hunter, but it has a lot of old movie channels as well as 24/7 kickboxing and MMA. It also has a 24/7 poker channel I quite like.
Another one I like is Rakuten Viki however, I haven't watched it for a while as my fire stick is only 1080p and I have too many other devices attached. I believe it is on Roku but you have to jump through some hoops and have an account. The last I checked on the fire stick you did not. Viki offers a metric ton of Asian shows, mainly from Japan and South Korea but it does have chinese, Malaysian etc. It has subtitles. Some Japanese shows are hysterical, albeit weird.
Roku also do their own channels with free shows if you own a device.
For those who don't have a smart TV or a Streaming device, you can set up your own computer as a dedicated streaming device with Plex. It's been a while since I used it but I believe it now also offers free movies and TV.
Anime
If you are into Anime there is
The first 2 are free to watch, or offer premium without ads which you can have a trial with. Crunchyroll is the better of the two with more original choice for Japanese voice and subs, while Funimation has more Dubs. I don't believe HiDive is free to watch but you do get a 2 week trial. These are more exclusives than the previous two.
PC Centric software
If you are a gamer or like Audiobooks or anything that uses computers for things like music making, programming or graphic design
Humble Bundle offers, as per the name, bundles. A long running site that got bought out by IGN. It offers both single items and bundles you can buy individually/as a pack while also offering a separate monthly subscription for around £8-9. The subscription gives you 12 games on average per month. That's the simplest explanation but it changes somewhat as sometimes you get to pick 10 out of 14 games, or get all 12.
Humble bundle offers more than just games though. Every Tuesday they bring a new bundle of games, while Thursday (I "think) a new bundle of books. They very often have books from the Black Library giving you a ton of Warhammer books. Sometimes it's standard E-books, other times it's audiobooks. A few times a year they do bundles for graphic design, a typical bundle would include programs like Paintshop Pro Corel Painter etc, They usually go for £0.76 for tier 1 up to around £18 for tier 3, which would include 4-6 full titles with 10+ addons. They also often have Music making bundles or video editing software as well as Programming or video game development.
The bundles change often, they usually have around 11 bundles at a time that last for 20 days. Sometimes it's trash but they do often have some very good deals.
Fanatical offers the same as humble bundle except usually not as high quality, but sometimes they do have some incredible deals, and they are very very cheap.
Both humble and fanatical are safe, trusted and been around a long time, and they are NOT grey market key sites. They work with the publishers and developers. You can buy games both old and new for a lot cheaper than you would most other places. Unless it states otherwise, keys are usually for steam.
**BOTH HB and Fanatical (HB much more common) offer free games fairly often. The catch is linking your steam account to them (at least HB). It is safe however.
IndieGala is another site like above. Except, these are much much lower quality. However, they offer a metric ton of free games. Quality is low but it is legitimate, and a lot of free stuff.
Game Store Fronts
  • Steam This one is so obvious I didn't add it, but apparently many want me to. It is the best out there, and you can find almost everything, with fantastic deals.
  • Greenmangaming offers games cheaply. Again, not a grey market site (which are legal but unethical) and they sometimes do bundles.
  • GoG (Good old games) is a DRM free site run by CDPR, the makers of the Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk. They offer you games quite cheap and not needing DRM (such as Steam, Uplay etc which is less invasive versions of dodgy DRM from the olden days).
  • Epic Games Despite the controversy whether you care about their rivalry with valve, they offer free games ever week. Without ever having bought anything I have gained over 170 games. literally. Good games for the most part. They often give you £10 coupons as well.
  • Twitch Everyone knows twitch, but if you don't, it's a streaming service for watching gamers and girls with low cut tops accidentally bending over in front of the game. However, if you're signed up to prime, you get free games each month (and randomly between the set bunch).
  • Playstation Store Currently has January sales. Currently the free games for PS+ are for PS4: Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Greedfall. For the Ps5 it is Maneater
  • Games with Gold Bleed 2 and the King of Fighters XIII is available until Janurary 15th whilst little Nightmares is available until January 31st.
Gaming Subscriptions
Like the TV versions, you can sign up to these for a free trial (or very cheap). If you do sign up to only one at a time, it should keep you busy for a few months
  • Xbox Game Pass You can do this on both/either an Xbox or PC. If you sign up to the regular one, you can get a month (maybe three!) for £1. After you have done that, you can sign up to the premium version for 3 months at £1 a month. Most people know game pass, but you can download a large selection of games for free. The premium version gives you games with gold, allowing you to keep the games forever (but can only play with a subscription)
  • Ubisoft+ I'm not 100% sure if you get a trial or not. This allows a large collection of Ubisoft titles to play for £12.99 a month. Quite expensive but good if you like Ubisoft titles I guess.
  • EA Play EA's version. Goes by a ton of names I think, EA Access, EA Play, Origin Access etc etc. There's a couple of versions of this, and it is across all platforms (PS4/5, Xbox, PC) but not sure about the switch. I "think" the premium allows you to play on all platforms, while the cheaper one on a single platform, but I may be mistaken.
  • PS Now a once terrible service that is now actually very good. Allows you to download some Ps4 games to your PS4/5 and lets you stream a massive amount of Ps2/3/4 to your PC or playstation.
There's more like nvidia's service but you need the Shield device which is quite expensive. I'll leave it at that.
Audiobooks & Ebooks
  • Audible Not sure what the current deal is but if you are a prime member you can sign up for a trial and get a free Audiobook each month for 3 months. Some warhammer books are 48 hours long, 3 of those gives you a good 100+ hours of listening!
  • Comixology Another Amazon company, but lets you download some free comics I believe.
  • Marvel Unlimited No experience with this. ItFuckingWont wanted me to add it. A subscription service for Marvel.
Education
  • Sign Language BSL here No experience myself, suggested by n21brown and asked for a few times. Didn't know SL was so popular! Listed as "Pay what you can"
  • BBC's Bitesize here is apparently good for home learning. Again, no personal experience.
If you need some spare change
Okay, I don't generally bother with it, but maybe some of this could be useful to you. These are NOT a quick way to make a fortune. These are small things you can do over time for a bit of pocket change
  • If you have prime you can get a FREE FIVE POUND GIFT CARD by literally just streaming a song from Amazon music (which is included in prime) here is the details According to the comments it's only for select people, but it's worth trying If the link doesn't work for you just google "Amazon £5 coupon music"
  • Now, these sorts of sites have been around for years, I haven't used any other than talkInsights which I must have signed up to 10-15 years ago. Basically they send you surveys and you answer them. They are confidential and don't ask for personal details in the survey. You need 2000 points and you get £20. During the pandemic they've slowed down but I probably get around £40 a year. Not much I know, but it's an email followed by a quick survey ticking boxes. Depending on your answer sometimes you get screened out, I'm not telling you to lie but just be consistent with your answers and you should be able to work out how to not get screened. Some emails are only worth 20 points, others 200. It's slow to get to the 2000 but very quick to just answer a few questions.
  • Apparently beermoneyuk is a good sub to make some pocket change with.
  • There is also matched betting. I have never done this, I don't have the patience but from what I've read, it's legitimate, it works and you can make a fair amount of cash from it so long as you do it correctly, and there's a ton of guides. I mention this because people stuck at home could get into it and as long as you're careful (I.E not entering in the wrong numbers) it's risk free AND it pisses off the betting shops. It seems people in comments have had success with it. Disclaimer A couple have complained about gambling. This arguably is not gambling. If you are susceptible to addiction do not do it. However, it's argued that there is no fun or buzz in this, and it's a very tedious and time consuming thing. Others argue you can't make the same money anymore (People were making thousands, now only hundreds if that). It's risk free providing you know what you're doing, the risks are user error, such as entering the wrong numbers. Someone pointed out that due to the lockdown, bets could potentially be cancelled due to sport stopping. So use on a side of caution. We're (mainly) adults so I'll leave it up just because this doesn't have the excitement of regular gambling.
  • Microsoft Rewards This is an easy way to make pocket change doing very little. Most people have a MS account. The rewards program offers you numerous ways to grab points, by playing free to play games, answering small questions (you don't even need to answer most of the time, just open the link and shut it) and by using bing and searching on it. I've gotten 20k points JUST by answering questions over a couple months. There are many rewards but you can grab a £5 gift card for 6k for example, or a month of game pass (and AFAIK you can make points playing the games)
  • Google rewards Someone mentioned this in the comments. I have not used it, so can not give any input on it. Sounds similar to TalkInsights which I linked. Google states "Complete short surveys while standing in line, or waiting for a subway. Get rewarded with Google Play or PayPal credit for each one you complete. Topics include everything from opinion polls, to hotel reviews, to merchant satisfaction surveys. We’ll notify you when a survey is waiting."
That's it for now. I will try to update as I go along. A long post but I hope that it can help some of you with finding something good to do that's free, cheap or a bargain. I do suggest getting prime, especially since you get free music, free delivery, free TV and music and free video games each month. In fact, there's a ton of perks and I feel I've gotten way over the cost investment.
Hope it helps someone at least
PartTimeCrazy said if you bought an Apple product you get 3 free months of Apple Arcade and Apple TV free for a year
fakehunted is upset I didn't mention wanking. Tesco have 225 sheets of Tissue for £0.75!
tale_lost suggested Project Gutenberg for a collection of free E-Books
Learning Language
Unfortunately, I don't have time to check every link listed so I will link the comments:
Togtogtog Gives a lot of links for Spanish
Board & Tabletop games
Corporal_Anaesthetic has made a list of Board games

HEALTH
I'm not a doctor! But if you're a smoker, something I strongly suggest is to quit. I struggled for years but in the first lockdown I quit, technically. I haven't had a cigarette since, however, I do that silly thing millennials do. I vape, but, it made quitting extremely easy. I would not have been able to do it if it wasn't for 88Vape They sell extremely cheap liquids at £1 each. You can find these in B&M but you can pick up 25 for £20 or buy your own mix.
Vitamin D deficiency has been said to be a big problem for the virus. I'd suggest (again, not a doctor!) that you pick some up. Tesco do a 3 for 2 deal. So you can pick up 270 tablets for £7.
If you are vulnerable you MIGHT be able to phone tesco and get put on their delivery saver list (currently it's paused but phoning may help. At the very least they might give you a priority slot. I did this for my mum, we didn't shop at Tesco but I phoned for her, and they put her on with no hassle, so she can always get a delivery.
HELP & ADVICE
The lockdown Rules.
Reasons to leave home include:
  • Work or volunteering where it is "unreasonable" to work from home. This includes work in someone else's home, such as that carried out by social workers, nannies, cleaners and tradespeople
  • Education, training, childcare and medical appointments and emergencies
  • Exercise outdoors (limited to once a day). This includes meeting one other person from another household in an open public space to exercise
  • Shopping for essentials such as food and medicine
  • Communal religious worship
  • Meeting your support or childcare bubble. Children can also move between separated parents Activities related to moving house
I want to add, if you are in danger you are also allowed (and must!) to get away from the situation for some reason, BBC seems to have missed this very important thing (or I am blind)
Support
FOR THOSE SHIELDING YOU CAN CONTACT THE ROYAL VOLUNTARY SERVICE. These people helped my mother with picking up her medicine from the chemist. They were very helpful and went out their way to keep in touch and do it immediately. (It's the only experience I have with them though)
_riotingpacifist wanted these links added, but I simply just don't have the time to vet and check all the suggestions here, so I will link as is:
Update:
Digital Art
These are Free
  • Krita Arguably the best in my opinion. It has a load of options, brushes and a decent UI. It works fantastic with a tablet.
  • Gimp This is a decent program but last I used, the UI was a pain, and it isn't so user friendly while misses features, but it works, and it is possible to do some incredible creations on it.
  • Medibang Paint This is slightly geared towards Comics and Manga. I really enjoy using this with my drawing Tablet. As far as I know, it also for regular tablets for Android/Ipad and is free.
You can pick up a drawing tablet on Amazon quite cheap these days! Small ones that are just a black slate such as the wacom ones are good but takes some practice to get use to, but very worth it if you can't afford a dedicated drawing tablet with a screen.
Office suit software
A couple of free applications for word processing, spreadsheets etc.
  • LibreOffice This has most the average user would need to write their own books or to work from home. There's not a huge amount of difference between the two I'm linking (since I last used anyway) so it's more for preference.
  • Open Office You can pick this up here and again, like above it's just preference.
Music Making
I'm going to direct to matthewharris806 for some links as all the programs I've used like Reason are expensive, or cheaper stuff in bundles such as Magix software.
Games development
D_Dad_Default gives some links for that here

PAYSAFE VS PAYONEER - Which is the Better Buy?

Paysafe is about to merge w/ BFT, hopefully sometime this quarter and as most of you know, it is a digital payments company. Payoneer, is rumored to be possibly merging w/ FTOC and also is a digital payments company.
So why are digital payments a big deal? Well, digital payments are expected to impact 80% of existing banking revenue and be a $7.6 TRILLION industry by 2024. Furthermore, it is expected that current digital payment companies including both Paysafe and Payoneer will experience double digit annual growth over the next 10 years. Or more specifically, a CAGR of 14.2% as a sector.
But there are already big names like SQ & PYPL, why would I want to buy into Paysafe or Payoneer? The answer is simple. The rate at which digital payments are expanding, there is almost infinite growth for companies who can position themselves by having a niche or corner markets in other countries. And when investing you are looking for both growth and scale.
Paysafe currently specializes in payment processing, API, Online payments, gambling payments, Dig Payment Interation w/ Business, Receipts and managing them, fraud detection, automated billing, multiple currency support, mobile payments and currency conversion.
Payoneer currently specializes in Single & Mass Payments, Partner Networking, Receiving Payments, Multi-Currency Support & Integrated Payment systems, digital marketing, ecommerce.
Paysafe acquires revenue based on a sliding scale or a high volume client rate. Where as Payoneer operates on a flat fee percentage.
Paysafe is expected to have $1.5 billion in revenue this year while Payoneer is expected to have around $300 million. Paysafe is obviously the bigger company, so we should skip investing in Payoneer, right? Not soo fast, just because they are currently smaller now, doesn't mean they won't be a billion dollar revenue producing company in 5 years. And that means lots of growth in both valuation and market cap, meaning, your stock price erupts with the growth.
Payoneer and Paysafe both have big name clients. Too many to list, but Payoneer supports Amazon, Google, Adobe and AirBNB. Paysafe has clients such as Playstation, Steam, Skype & Facebook. So both have big name clients and names paying the bills currently.
So which one should you buy? While Payoneer is a strong and a growing international player who is rapidly expanding in India, Japan, Phillipines, South Korea and the UK and although a much smaller company, it has some big name customers. Also note that Payoneer has tripled its revenue over the last 5 years. And on the other hand, Paysafe too has solid customers, much greater revenue and it too is positioned to grow quickly in the digital payments world.
Well, the answer seems simple. BFT is the safer bet and is about to close their reverse merger any day now. It's selling for a bit over $15 right now while FTOC is at a bit under $12. Both are based on a NAV of $10. On the other hand, for those of you comfortable with risk, buying FTOC on speculation before the DA/LOI are signed and announced could very likely result in you making $2-$4 share on the announcement alone.
Another thing to consider as well, is that BFT offers one of the largest gambling wallets in the world. Why is that important? Well, lots of states and govt's are feeling the effects of C-19 on their coffers from the lack of tax dollars and are either rolling back regulation or writing in new regulations so they can benefit from gambling tax dollars. I expect that to greatly expand Paysafes revenues and profitability as gambling carries higher fees than traditional services.
I do feel that both PayoneeFTOC & BFT/Paysafe will continue to expand rapidly, most likely dwarfing the anticipated 14.2% CAGR and that they have a strong chance of tripling in size AGAIN over the next 5 years as digital payments snowball.
So bottom line, digital payments are in the golden age of expansion and both of these companies are poised to enjoy their share of that expansion and while neither company seems to be knocking the others bottom out w/ a Donkey Punch, Paysafe is the larger of the two. BFT/Paysafe seems like a sure thing, while FTOC/Payoneer is the riskier play until the DA/LOI are signed. But as usual, with greater risk, comes greater reward.
Disclosure: I am long on both BFT/Paysafe & FTOC/Payoneer.

Lockdown, things to do, help & advice.

Disclaimer I am posting this here because I got a message from the mods asking me to. I'm not from London so links aren't London centric (but hopefully still of help) and the main post is here so any updates will likely be there (I will try here but it's hard to keep up with the amount of suggestions)
Thanks.

_riotingpacifist wanted this links added, but I simply just don't have the time to vet and check all the suggestions here, so I will link as is:
Update:

[Videogames] Zhengtu Online, The Original Sinner of free-to-play gaming and lootboxes

Hi everyone, this is my first contribution to HobbyDrama, I hope this is an entertaining read and also to the community's standards. Let's go!!
Brief glossary before we begin (and some foreshadowing)
MMORPG: massively multiplayer online role-playing game, MMO for short. A videogame genre that generally invites hundreds, or up to thousands, of players to share a space. Depending on the game, anything from general adventure to large-scale war to economy and politics can be simulated. I find it hard to believe that anyone reading this could possibly not know what this is but it's included anyway.
Electro-convulsive therapy: ECT for short, it is a form of treatment where electrodes are "carefully" hooked up to a person's head and a "precise" level of electric shock is delivered, in order to treat major psychiatric disorders. Developed in 1938 when most psychiatric treatments was in their infancy, it is still used today occasionally for serious cases of depression, mania, or psychoses. In its early days however, there were widespread claims of abuse associated with its use.
Pt1: The Root of all that is bullshit
Zhengtu Online (hereafter referred to as ZT) was an immensely popular MMORPG that was developed in China and primarily served a Chinese playerbase. Released in 2006, at its peak it boasted more 2 million players, which while not particularly impressive relative to World of Warcraft (8mil worldwide at the same time), was a truly insane amount of success in a gaming scene that was very much in its embryonic stage.
The game itself was an unimpressive Diablo-style top down fantasy setting, and its gameplay loop primarily revolved around improving your ability to kill various things, but what made it special was the overarching metagame: every player population (sharing a server) was divided into 10 kingdoms. Kings and generals were all individual players, and they dictated politics to their neighbors--primarily in the form of initiating player-vs-player (or PVP) warfare.
Most contemporary MMOs had an upfront price plus a monthly subscription fee. In China, such pricing models were mostly replaced by paying oney for a set amount of ingame playing time. Unlike all of them, ZT was completely free to play (F2P).
Free to play, however, meant pay-to-win: the best weapons and armor, and even leveling up your character, needed you to pay real money. Since so much of the game was focused on PVP, it also created an eternal arms race between players, each paying for the privilege of not being evaporated by a high level enemy.
The way they did this was unique at the time. While F2P online games had already seen their rise in South Korea, equipment was generally priced explicitly via in-game currency and bought in virtual shops. ZT fused this with the sweet, sweet taste of gambling: gear in the game was primarily obtained in loot boxes, and you had to pay for keys to open them.
It needs to be emphasized that gambling of any kind was illegal in China, but, in an eerie parallel of American CEOS in the future, ZT's developers said it wasn't gambling because, well, you weren't getting your money back.
By combining this with multiple other exploitative practices, such as providing a small amount of premium currency like a casino giving you a free bet on the house, or awarding special items to the player with the highest number of lootboxes opened in a day, ZT was making money like taking candy from a candy-hating baby, and made gaming history.
As far as what this means for gamers, this was Eve giving Adam the apple, Oppenhemier splitting the atom, Prometheus stealing fire, Caesar crossing the Rubicon, and goddamn Helen Keller signing "water".
If you play any kind of videogames today, you've stepped through the long shadow that ZT had cast. Zynga (developers of Farmville) would be founded in 2007 and focused exclusively on free games with real-money integration. Lootboxes made it into Team Fortress 2 in 2010, one of the first major western-developed games to include them.
Similar mechanics (with varying degrees of exploitative practices) came to FIFA in 2010, Mass Effect 3 in 2012, Counter-Strike in 2013, League of Legends in 2016, and NBA 2K in 2017, infecting every genre of gaming under the sun, including the most popular MMO, World of Warcraft. As an aside, corporate defense of lootboxes in Star Wars Battlefront II also led to the most downvoted Reddit comment of all time.
Finally someone speaks out
The System, an article published in the Chinese newspaper Southern Weekly in 2007, was a hard-hitting expose on the exploitive practices of ZT. It chronicled the rise and fall of a gamer who accidentally becomes the monarch of one of these in-game Kingdoms, her addiction to the game, and final disillusionment when she realized that in-game player behaviour was being explicitly manipulated by its designers for the purpose of creating addicts and selling more lootbox keys.
The whole article is worth a read, even if it is sensationalist in a way that immediately tells you the writer was clearly a failed novelist of some kind - describing virtual destruction with the kind of prose most people would consider and then discard for a gang rape, for starters. But it had gotten its point across. It created an explosive backlash against the game in China, and was even translated into English and propagated across gaming forums.
The fallout
In an act of censorship usually reserved for the CCP government, this article--including its English translation--began to be scrubbed from the internet, with speculation pointing to the immensely powerful CEO behind ZT. I mean, who else could it be, right?
This article would light the fire of China's first moral panic regarding videogames. In its wake, swift legislation would be enacted regarding internet gaming addiction as well as online proxy gambling. ZT would heed the new laws and remove its lootbox mechanics in the following years and many other similar games followed suit.
Most tragically, the panic (which, to be fair, was fueled by a very real problem) allowed unscrupulous characters such as Yang Yongxin, vice chairman of a hospital in Shandong province, to create "internet addiction centres". With its legitimacy established by a docuseries ("Fighting the Internet Monster") on the state-run television channel CCTV, these centres charged terrified parents exorbitant prices in order to keep teens by force in, essentially, private hospitals and asylums, subjecting them to inhumane conditions and abusive ECT in order to "cure" them of their disease. It was estimated that Yang earned the equivalent of more than $6million USD from his addiction centre in the short space of 2 years. While his centre was eventually closed by state order, he received no punishment of any kind.
As for ZT, it limped on until 2018. A mobile game reboot was made in 2015. A tie-in fantasy movie was released in 2020. it was not very good.
~~~~~~
Addendum: how we got here: Of Mice and levers
In the 1950s, an American scientist named BF Skinner discovered the following: when mouse is put in a box with a small lever that, when pressed, dispenses a food pellet, they will quickly learn to start pressing on the lever as fast as possible. If you then stop the food from dispensing, the mouse will lose interest quickly after pressing a few times and seeing no food coming out.
If, however, you hooked up the lever to dispense food at random intervals, the mouse will be practically glued to the lever and hammer on it nonstop, sometimes long after they become full, and long after any food has been dispensed.
This discovery, known as variable outcome operant conditioning, formed the foundation of our understanding of addiction and gambling. Skinner would go on to try and fail to make bombs guided by pigeons, but we're not interested in that here. His research tool--the Skinner Box--would become a descriptor you may have come across when discussing exploitive game mechanics.
Summary
Once upon a time, a game combined the random outcome of videogaming with real-money gambling. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.
The bright spot is our most consistent metric: current hospitalizations. This week, they appear to have leveled off. That said, there are still more than 2x the number of hospitalized patients now as during previous surges.
Here's that weekly look. Testing data may be back online after the holidays and case data is beginning to stabilize. A trip down memory lane with a few vanilla D3 controversies sheds light on D4's heavy community emphasis.
There was so much fiery drama and controversy during the Jay Wilson D3 era, you can't help but think Blizzard looked in that rear-view mirror and said "Good lord did all that really happen? Let's see if we can avoid having our director get death threats this time".
And sure enough, there really was some crazy stuff that went on. Like that Brevik-Wilson fiasco that came out of nowhere. With many games you would have the previous version's team hyping up and promoting the next version but with D2 and D3 you had Wilson saying "F..k that loser" to Brevik and Brevik basically calling D3's team a bunch of scrubs that don't understand ARPGs or loot systems. Brevik needed to hype his new Marvel game and Jay kind of took the bait and didn't handle it well. In particular, saying F that loser alienated much of the community on a personal level. It would have been better if he just argued Brevik's comments on their merit. Wilson even got death threats from some in the community later on.
And then you had all the controversy around RMAH, people using RMAH more frequently than actually playing the game. Some making $1000's flipping items on RMAH. The massive 2013 gold exploit tanking the economy at some point, 2 BEEZ 2 BEEZ, multiple lawsuits, and South Korea initially banning D3 if it included RMAH because of their gambling laws on real money transactions, etc.
And the deal with online-only - they really needed to set expectations and make sure everyone understood that offline just wasn't happening. A lawsuit based in France was brought against Blizzard because of online-only and it quickly became clear they needed giant red letters ONLINE-ONLY for packaging. You had so many D2 players used to both offline and online and suddenly boom you're online-only. Not to mention the launch issues with the servers being completely overwhelmed and players being unable to even play. Online is needed - it's needed for competitive ladders, putting the kibosh on modding, piracy, etc. But going cold turkey at launch with no offline was bound for trouble. The console version finally provided both offline and modding but this was years down the road and consoles aren't PCs.
And then there was the promise of meaninhful PvP and not delivering, the very early need for loot 2.0 because itemization wasn't what was expected and people were pissed, Bashiok's bizarre initial denial that Kripp had the world-first HC clear, so many things just seemed to give the middle-finger to the community.
And you can go on and on with other issues but the point is that Blizzard clearly doesn't want a repeat of all that D3 drama and the new D4 team is making a huge effort of collaborating with the community, respecting feedback, being transparent, and setting expectations. Subjective, but D4 should turn out just fine.
Spanish media: "Why is Gamestop the long-awaited triumph of "Occupy Wall Street"?"
Deleted from WSB. It has an obvious ideological bias, but in any case it's one of the most accurate and complete articles I have read to date about the whole $GME situation.
Feb 6, 2021. By Andrés Arellano Báez
Nassim Nicholas Taleb abandoned anonymity since the launch of his book "The Black Swan". In an interview to promote the text with Charlie Rose, the author shared that "a stockbroker on Wall Street may have no more predictive capacity than a cab driver" about his market. And he spoke about the matter from experience, as it was precisely in that mythical place where his first job would be located. For decades, the humans inhabiting that corner of Manhattan made the world believe that Taleb's ideas were ridiculous: they boasted that they were wizards capable of navigating the turbulent waters of the financial world thanks to their vast knowledge. And the story seemed credible; until a group of uneducated citizens beat them in a billion-dollar game, on their terms and conditions, and sank many of those proud boatmen.
There is always wisdom to be found in history. According to investor Dylan Ratigan, a connoisseur of the US market like few others and author of "Greedy Bastards", George W. Bush's attempts to privatize Social Security in the United States must be framed in the context of the ongoing desire, mainly by Wall Street, to convince the small investor to become a stock market player. The desire of the sharks of the financial world, always hungry to expand their business, made them see those citizens without significant monetary resources as weak prey that, once they managed to unite, would become truly juicy portions. But the bait failed to catch the victims and the public's disconnect with the world of finance remained intact. That is, until one company hit upon the root of the problem: the interface. Ratigan's words on the matter are illuminating: "A new investor would come to the market and find an interface that looked as complicated as driving a 747. The appearance of Robinhood, presenting a platform apparently developed under the slogan "investments for dummies", which also did not charge commissions to its users, attracted and convinced millions to participate.
In August 2019, Mexico's El Financiero accidentally stumbled upon a story that would grow into an unpredictably mind-blowing one. In an article focused on how the next big financial stratospheric leap would be in South Korea and some small companies, the U.S. newspaper revealed that Michael "Burry asked Gamestop, a video game retailer, and Tailored Brands, a men's clothing retailer," to buy back all of his shares. At the time, the investor turned celebrity after being played by Christian Bale in "The Big Short", owned 5.3% of the video game retailer through his hedge fund Scion Asset Management, which he acquired at a price per share of between 2 and 4.2 dollars, according to the media.
Although Barry had become a major player on Wall Street, he consecrated his title by betting on two unpredictable crashes, both in markets certified as AAA by the major rating agencies: the dot. com debacle in 2001 and the global financial crisis caused by the loss on mortgage-backed securities securitized as credit default swaps in 2007, in Gamestop's case it seems that it was not its ability to foresee the future that led to its success, but its already earned influence in the markets that was the reason for having a third winning bet. It was a self-fulfilling prophecy. As soon as the guru took a position in Gamestop, another major investor, Ryan Cohen, made a significant purchase of the stock, and then a massive number of smaller investors, many of them fans of the brand and initiated into the stock market thanks to Robinhood, followed in his footsteps. One of them deserves special mention: Keith Gill, known online as "DeepF-ingValue". A crazy and unprecedented story was beginning to unfold.
Nothing indicates that Burry foresaw the debacle. According to Business Insider, after taking a strong position in Gamestop, the financier promoted far-reaching changes in the company. His bet seems to have been to transform the company's fundamentals, price the stock and generate a large profit over the long term. He had already stated his vision of "investing heavily in undervalued and overlooked stocks", as "asset managers have orphaned lower-value stocks globally". All of the new investors, many of them brand lovers, wanted the same thing as the financial guru. Gill confessed to The Wall Street Journal that "people were doing a quick take, saying Gamestop was the next Blockbuster," referring to another chain fallen from grace. "It seemed like a lot of people just weren't digging deeper," the interviewee continued. It was a gross misclassification of opportunity." All the small investors, led by Gill, saw Gamestop as a company that would have a second life.
But along came the pandemic that would change everything, and everything would go haywire, laying the groundwork for what would be a truly unprecedented IPO. Gamestop is a corporation whose heart is located in shopping malls. It is their space par excellence. With the spread of Covid-19 closing each one of them, the future of the business was projected to be threatened. The biggest and most traditional players in the market became aware of the problems created by the new context and acted accordingly, starting a bet against the company: short operations whose element of relevance is only one: the big funds decided to invest millions of dollars waiting for the share price to fall. They would make a profit if the price of the purchased share fell over time. And the global outlook created an ideal scenario for such a financial move. From their perspective, the analysis was correct and the numbers proved to be right.
The action taken by hedge funds is known in the market as short selling. The funds borrow a share from someone and are obliged to return it to its owner on a certain date. The borrowed share is sold at the market price to a third party with whom, in turn, they are obliged to buy it back within a certain period of time. The fund that lent the share to sell it to a third party expects the price of the security to fall, so that when it purchases it again it can do so at a cheaper price, generating a profit. If he sells it at 100 and buys it back at 50, well....
The person who buys the stock to sell it later, expects the price of the stock to go up, of course, selling it at a higher price than he bought it. The problem with short trading, for the fund borrowing the stock, is that you can make a limited amount, but you can lose an infinite amount of money. If the fund sells the stock for 100 and it loses all of its value, when it buys it back from the original owner, it will pay zero for it, producing a gain of 100. But, if the stock he lent and sold at 100, at the time he has to buy it back is not worth zero or a hundred, but is valued at 50,000, then he is obliged to pay 50,000 for it, turning his transaction into a loss of 49,900.
And, when some of the big names on Wall Street began to bet short, to look for Gamestop's failure, to go against a company loved by many, the gates of hell opened. "It was like a war," one of the investors in Gamespot told El Diario.es. Bad news would come out, like the coronavirus was going to wipe out Gamestop, and people would put more money in. It was a class war. And so it was: bankers were fighting to drive the stock price down, Reedit users were willing to do anything to drive it up. "We will be able to be mentally retarded longer than the vulture funds will be able to be profitable," commented one of the warriors at Wallstreetbets, the Reedit space where the men and women who fought this battle crowded in. And in the end, they triumphed, raising the price to unpredictable numbers. That is, it could not be otherwise, until the Manhattan bankers, the center of neoliberal ideology, the main space from where an ideological battle to the death against government intervention in the economy has been waged the strongest, the king of the free market, decided to turn to Daddy State to save him from the guillotine. Here the story becomes fascinating.
Given that the people Wall Street was fighting against were not rational, did not act on market logic, did not care about losing money, they were forced into draconian measures to stop the bleeding. The fund that had lost the most money in this gamble was called Melvin Capital. Its major commercial competitor is called Citadel. The latter decided to take advantage of the situation and acquire the former. Once this purchase was made, Citadel, whose CEO is Kenneth Griffin, the highest paid executive in the world (1.7 billion USD per year), took possession of all these bets. Why would a financial company carry out an operation that would put it in a business with the proven capacity to bleed its finances to death? The only logical reason, the only possible answer, the only plausible explanation is that Citadel knew how to suture the wound causing the bleeding.
Speaking fess are the fees paid by companies to certain professionals of notorious trajectory in the United States to dictate speeches for their employees, seeking to enrich and enlighten their workers, irradiating them with the wisdom contained in notable names. Janet Yellen, current Secretary of the Treasury in the United States, is an academic with an unbeatable track record. She has received almost every award in her career, and each of them has been awarded with justice. The Nobel Prize that has eluded her will surely come her way soon. But unless she has discovered how to solve all the ills of humanity through economics and has organized a talk to explain her findings, there is no justification whatsoever for the $800,000 received last December from Citadel for a few words. On the other hand, such a staggering amount is understandable when, as Dylan Ratigan explains, it echoes the theory that speaking fess are awarded not for speaking, for the speech, but for granting direct access to the person hired. By December of last year, it was certain that Yellen would be the next Treasury Secretary under the Biden administration.
Although it is nothing more than speculation, rather the worst kept secret, it serves to clarify why Robinhood, the platform that had convinced millions of citizens to invest their money in the market, that had made life easier for those who wanted to buy stocks and the tool used by small investors against Wall Street, in an unprecedented decision allowed its users to close positions in Gamestop, but prohibited the purchase of the stock. It did not freeze the transaction of the stock traded as GME, it only prohibited its acquisition. If a stock can only be liquidated, it will see its price decrease, something that only benefited Citadel, a company that had acquired Melvin Capital, which had paid $800,000 to Yellen for speeches and who, this is the most relevant of all, the clue that deciphers the crime: it is the best client of the Robinhood platform.
Robinhood is unable to buy or sell shares directly. Legally this is the case. Hence its need to work with "market makers", companies that the legal framework does give them that power. Their best-established partnership for this operation is with Citadel. A "market maker" is a type of organization that, because of its particularities, requires a lot of information about how trends move. A "market maker" needs to anticipate events in order to perform its function. A short sale requires anticipating whether a stock is going to go down or up in price, for example. When Robinhood asks Citadel to buy or sell millions of shares for its investors, it is giving them the information they need. And in order for Robinhood to use Citadel's services and not another "market maker," Citadel pays a small commission for each transaction. That's why this platform, which does not charge its users a commission for buying and selling stocks, is a billionaire. That commission is its business. "When they don't charge you for a service, it's because you are the product," says the wise popular adage.
Any technical explanation given by Vladimir Tenev, CEO of Robinhood, justifying his reasons for having stopped the purchase of a share is simply ridiculous in light of the analysis made by Ratigan: "From a legal point of view," explained the businessman, "the only organization that has the authority to stop the purchase and sale of a share, let alone the ridiculousness of stopping one part of the transaction and not the other, is the New York Stock Exchange". He complements, "the only valid reason to stop the purchase and sale of a stock is for the leakage of relevant information that impacts the market or knowledge of imminent fraud". The examples cited in his peroration - Enron and Worldcom - are telling enough to show this was not the case. "A company has no authority to stop a stock from trading," Ratigan says, "much less prevent it from being bought while prohibiting it from being sold. That act is clear market manipulation." And therein lies written, in that sentence, the epitaph of Wall Street.
From now on, in any debate where one of the parties dares to cite the benefits of the free market and the superiority of such a system, they risk being ridiculed by their opponent with just one word: "Gamestop". Time will tell whether or not Yellen acted in favor of her clients; but intervention in the sacrosanct market did occur. They have even gone further. Witnessing NASDAQ CEO Adena Friedman on live television, without blushing, calling for the installation of regulations in the market is to witness the true essence of an ideology that was nothing more than a scam coming to light. The US financial sector as a whole, never spared resources and financed for decades all kinds of propaganda about the damage caused by regulations, how inefficient they are, how contrary to the wisdom of the market their very existence was. Today they are begging for their declared enemy to not only exist, but to act, to be present and intervene to protect them on their own playing field.
And the fear is justified. Reedit investors did not topple Wall Street. But the Wall Street representative against whom they fought to the death, that one they did defeat. He went bankrupt. For the first time in its history, the mecca of the financial world found a real opponent. Competition in the U.S. stock market sector was always between equals and the losses of one were the gains of another of his own. Never again. "Occupy Wall Street", the battle slogan of the 2008 victims camping out in Zuccoti Park, in front of the majestic offices of the big players in the stock market sector, reached a whole new level when they knocked down the walls protecting their empire, unleashing the entry of outsiders to occupy their business. When the war for GME began, Wallstreetbets had 3 million forum followers. Today there are 8 million. More citizens, more money, more power. The stakes are on the table and now anything can happen.
Help Please? Considering Officer. Am I too narrow in my goals?
Hi All,
First of all, thank you for clicking and reading this. I've reached a critical point in my life where I feel a sense of urgency to make a decision due to family issues (dad is sick and we've lived apart for 15+ years) so your help will be greatly appreciated.
I have two bachelor's degrees (double-majored) and a 3.1 GPA. I'm considering enlisting as a Cryptologic Linguist (35P) or going in as a commissioned officer via OTS to be a Financial Manager (36A). I just took unofficial ASVAB (EST) and DLAB this week at a recruiting station and scored high enough to get into either (high enough to do Korean for Crypto; Category 4 DLAB).
While I have plenty of questions about the Cryptologic Linguist role, my point of concern in this post is the likelihood that I can be stationed at South Korea as a Financial Manager officer. From what I know, the job and location are not guaranteed. However, I've heard that because of my background (Korean American currently working in finance with 5 years of accounting experience + degree) it's likely I can get the job, + soldiers seem not to want to go to Korea which raises my chances.
But I've heard from a recruiter's rough estimate that there are maybe only like 20-30 Financial Manager officers at Camp Humphreys and a lot fewer in other South Korean bases. I've also read online that the finance group is small. Can you guys please provide your input/estimates as well, and any thoughts about my situation?
Also, is there a good way to find out how many of each job is in South Korea? I'd like to get a breakdown to consider other possible jobs if needed.
Thank you all for your service! I gain more respect for you guys the more I learn about all this.
TL;DR Trying to get stationed in South Korea to be with aging parents. Currently working in finance as a civilian, with 5 years of accounting . Came from a good university with 3.1 GPA. Wondering how big of a gamble this is to get in as Financial Manager officer stationed in South Korea. Also curious to get a breakdown estimate of Army jobs in South Korea.
Online Gambling World As Players See It
It is important to learn where 먹튀검증is in a very commercial world today. This is not an easy discussion and will require us to spend time and effort if we want to seek enlightenment on this problem. But this knowledge is relevant for beginners, players, and casinos themselves. For example, this information can give you gambling perceptions, not only in the country but throughout the world. Statistics can give you information about the kind of addiction owned by the casino and the overall gambling behavior of the population. If you are an online gambler who is interested, you must make you updated to the latest news.
See a general description of online gambling realms
At this time, gamblers throughout the world are confused by the approval of the enforcement of the enforcement of the Internet gambling (Uigea), which forbid Americans from gambling games online and which seems to be the most urgent problem regarding public public. However, bills only target American citizens and US gambling and casino markets. But the implications of this law spread globally. One important effect is Strasehy higher in money transfer procedures and banking options on the gambling site. It began in 2007 even though in a way that was unclear and confusing. The result is the closure of online gambling sites as a result of a reduction in shares caused by the market which is reduced when the US forbids its people to join online gambling. Gambling sites outside the United States also prohibit the registration of US players. Indeed, the Uigea effect travels beyond America's boundaries, affecting the gambling industry throughout the world, damaging more casino sites than they should.
Gambling on the internet
So, you might want to check how prosperous games in other countries continue the gambling tradition. The American gambler is not completely prohibited from joining the gambling site and it must be clear. Some countries still allow people to gamble despite the presence of Uigea, which is not fully implemented throughout the country. More countries around the world promote casinos to compensate the terrible decline in the US casino market. These countries include Barbuda and Antigua in the Caribbean, where online gambling has long been successful and developed. Caribbean has some of the best licensed online casinos that booms because of low taxes and fast transactions. Of course, regardless of this Caribbean country, there are more countries that allow online gambling and online casinos to operate, such as France, Australia, South Korea and Germany. These countries have long seen economic benefits supporting this kind of market.
Gambling Future
The stability of land-based casinos is the subject of a sustainable debate. There is a lot of discussion about real economic benefits to promote casinos and let them develop on the commercial arena. There are also arguments about the pros and cons have them around and whether the benefits are greater than losses or vice versa. Even so, experts believe that online gambling and Roulette will definitely be for a while and that this industry remains prosperous, whatever happens.
👁 Hindsight. You should not have taken a Hagwon job, I hope you realize that now. They dig their claws into you, and got you by the balls on everything, or ovaries respectively.
👁 You should have recorded on video, all details regarding the contract and get them on tape lying to you about your work hours, vacation, salary etc, so that getting away from them and getting sympathy from the government is about 50% easier, as it's also legally binding. I talked about that here.
👁 This is why you don't bring a pet, 2 huge suitcases and a carry-on. 5 changes of clothes for work, 2 sets of shoes and a laptop + necessities, and that's it. Travel light, it's an unstable job.
👁 You should have a credit card with enough room for an emergency plane ticket back home, or beg your parents to bail you out.
👁 You should have your banking app installed BEFORE you leave. It's I.P. sensitive, and may not even be able to search for it, then download it, from Korea.
-------------------------------------------------
🦆 Find alternative housing. No matter what they tell you, they will kick your rear end out on the street and change the locks at the most opportune time. Probably the day you tell them you are quitting, they'll turn around and fire you out of anger, surprising you in the process. "Loyalty" is a one-way street in Korea, and it's extremely important to them. So when you are "disloyal" they will get revenge.
🦆 The best thing is to bunk up with another foreign teacher that will give you permission to stay for a little while. It won't cost you money. You can fight for your paycheck or change your Visa status then. So, secretly stay with a co-worker, or you should have invested in a relationship with another foreigner for this occasion.
🦆 You may need help from a friendly Korean to translate your needs. I doubt a sympathetic Korean co-worker will help. If you are Christian, I'd highly suggest joining a church and get cozy with them, they'll help, I know, I've gotten help from church people in a pinch.
🦆 Stay at a cheap motel. 여관 (Yuh-Gwan). Naver maps shows the location of them. There is another option for monthly stay, sort of like a hostel called a 고시원 (Go She Won). It's about 1/2 an efficiency apartment size. Cheap, but basically a broom closet. For a Yuh-Gwan, I'd have your friend translate a reduction in price if you stay for 2 weeks. They are hurting for money, they'll do it.
🦆 You have 2 weeks to inform the local gu office of your new residence. If you are going to be in the country for more than 2 weeks looking for a job or getting your pay, you need to update them, it's free. Past 2 weeks, the fines increase.
-------------------------------------------------
🦆 Get free help, and legal advice. There are a surprising number of resources available for foreigners (here). Very gently and pleasantly call and ask about your situation before trouble starts, then when it does, call back and verify. Where is the immigration office in your area? Do you have an I.D. and password for immigration online so you can make an appointment? Can you speak to someone in English there. What paperwork needs to be filled out, is there a link online so you can download it?
🦆 Ask about extending your stay to fight for your pay. You can get a 2 week extension for travel, or switch to a D-10 (looking for work). Ask about these options, you can't overstay your Visa even if it's not your fault. The back of your ARC must be current when you depart from the airport when you turn it in, and you MUST turn in your ARC. If the dates are wrong, you have a choice to go back and get a stamp making it current, (and miss your flight) or they can deport you and you may have trouble coming back. You don't want a deportation order on your passport, or having it in some world data-base somewhere making it hard to travel to other countries.
-------------------------------------------------
🦆 Your final pay: they have 14 days to pay you, from your last day (by law), and cancel your Visa. They don't, the penalties are absolutely crushing. The Dept. of Labor has special arresting powers. They can arrest the owner, put them in jail, and fine them $20,000. Don't threaten them with this, they'll laugh in your face. The agent at the Dept. of Labor will make them cry on the phone, I know, I went through this before. They delayed for 20 days, then when confronted by an agent, they paid me within the hour. It's about rank. You don't have any. Only a person with rank makes them quiver in fear. It's a dare, if you can find someone to force them to pay you, they'll pay, otherwise, they'll keep it. Spend your time finding that agency, don't bother with the Hagwon owner, they are crazy. So if you are going to stay and fight for it, predict that they'll delay for the full 14 days, and if they are stupid enough to incriminate themselves by openly breaking the law, expect to stay a little longer after filing a complaint.
👁 Hindsight. Did you get the owners official business card on your first day of employment? You should have, you'll need to hand deliver that with your complaint when you need to.
-------------------------------------------------
🦆 When you are ready to quit, demand a Certificate of Employment rather than a Letter of Release to transfer your work Visa to another employer. This is iffy, and I've never done it. It's something to ask at one of the help lines. Ask 3 difference sources, if 2/3 give you the same answer, that's probably the correct answer. It should have just facts only: title of company, dates of employment, signature, official ink stamp, telephone number, no personal opinions. I'd also check to see if you can transfer your Visa at any time or must you work for your employer for a minimum of 3 months before you are eligible for a C.O.E. You never know what loopholes there are.
🦆 A deal with the devil. Getting your release, but under terrible circumstances. So they will allow you to quit with a 60 day notice (that was nice of them), but you have to: find your replacement, pay back recruiter fees, stay on 90 days instead of 60, etc etc, THEN they will give you a Letter of Release. Of course, you know what's going to happen.....yep, you'll do all of it, then when your replacement comes in, they'll fire you and not give you a Letter of Release. Pretty big gamble to assume lying, incompetent scumbags will suddenly have a change of heart and not be scumbags isn't it? Have them give you a Letter of Release dated on the day you are leaving, which is not valid until that time, THEN you will stay a little bit longer and comply. What's the harm? You can't use it for another 90 days, so if you do run off, you have to survive without a job until that time, and they can cancel the Visa.
🦆 Do not agree verbally or in writing you will pay back anything. Recruiting / Visa / Immigration / Health check fees, nothing. "Pay now, sue later" that's the law. They MUST pay you your full salary NOW, and if they have reason to recoup some of it, the courts decide that, not revengeful Hagwon owners who will make excuses to steal all of it.
👁 Hindsight. You should have made sure you get an electronic pay stub to your email every month, IN ENGLISH to verify all deductions. None of this, "Administrative fees" garbage, that's what they use to take you out for dinner every month, at your expense. Anything missing from your salary is to be reported to the government.
🦆 A dirty trick. What you can do is, agree to pay back all of their ridiculous fees, get your Letter of Release, go to another employer, and then file a complaint for salary theft with the government and get all your money back. The law still applies to them, courts make those decisions, not Hagwon owners. Is it legal to willingly give your money to a mugger with a gun to your head and let them run off with it? No, it's still illegal whether you gave it to them or they ripped it from your hands. Just don't sign anything or be caught on audio agreeing to it, or email, and even so, the law still applies. "Pay now, sue later."
-------------------------------------------------
🦆 Get your rent deposit back. They'll huff and puff and stomp around and be difficult, but you must get this back. I talk about how to get it in 15 minutes or less here. It's natural to break up by some angry blow up, throw things, storm out the door. You need to evict that evil impulse from your heart. Instead, replace it with an even worse evil: a cold-blooded emotionless psychopath that absolutely is unmoved and undeterred by the emotional histrionics likely to be thrown at you--basically mirroring your employer. They want to make you so miserable and afraid, you'll skip out on what they owe you. Just keep showing up at their office like Jason Voorhees and hiss, "I want my money back now." And just stare at them, unmoved, an unreasonable automaton that will not stop, will not give in, will not be swayed by emotion or trickery, give me my money! You'll be surprised how good Koreans are at acting. They'll threaten, throw themselves on the floor and bite their pillow in anger, and when you are unmoved, they'll get up and sigh, "Ok.....that didn't work, we'll be there after 12 to check you out of your apartment, just wait for us.." Don't look ashamed or shy, confident and bold, make THEM feel ashamed and awkward. Practice in the mirror with daggers shooting out of your eyes. Do they look steely and cold or doe-eyed and scared? Are you looking away or down, or staring at some point on their forehead ready to throw-down at any second? Look at Mike Tyson's face before a fight when the referee is giving instructions. Yeah, he's communicating something isn't he. It's a non-verbal arm wrestling match, win it.
👁 Hindsight. You should have inserted language in your contract stipulating on your last day of employment, you are checking out of your apartment, cancelling internet, phone services etc. Never agree to leave money on the table, and trust that they'll forward your money within 45 days of your last day of employment. One of the stupidest and illogical things foreigners agree to.
👁 Every scratch, broken, dented, discolored this or that needs to be recorded with your phone, pictures taken and WRITTEN on the contract you sign verifying those things existed when the got there, if not, they'll charge you for them. Video tape what appliances are there. They say there was a microwave and there isn't, they'll charge you for a stolen microwave.
🦆 Get your pension even after you leave the country. (here)
-------------------------------------------------
🦆 Never quit. "Have you ever quit a job or broken a contract?" Answer: no. Fired, yes, and the employer broke the contract, not me. This is the most exquisite time you'll ever have at a job, knowing you don't care anymore, cut corners, be lazy, confront your manager at meetings, get sassy, challenge everything, piss people off you really want to piss off. I have no idea why people cut and run, when there is this precious time to teach however you want to teach, ignore complaints, be lazy, play games, take a few sick days and relax and be lazy, and still get paid for it....be lazy. They treated you like trash, what's wrong with a little juicy pay-back? "Yeah, I'm pretty busy as it is, that sounds kinda dumb, who's terrible idea is this anyway?" No filter man, just go with it. "Saturday? I'm an hourly employee, what's the pay? Is it regular or overtime pay? No pay? Then I ain't coming in. I'm not a slave. You don't pay me, I don't work, that's the deal! Since when do hourly employees work for free? Never heard of that. Oh, it's part of my regular pay? Then I'm SALARIED, not hourly, you lied to me!!!" If you are a Midnight Runner, even better! Take your maximum days off with "migraines" get aspirin, stay home. Go into work being a total jerk with your bags packed in another foreigner's apartment, get fired, THEN leave.
Make sure your 🦆🦆🦆 are in a row, bags packed, moved out, and ready for inspection, Visa extension papers are ready to be turned in before you are ready to set the bridge on fire at this stage. It's up to you how you do this, BUT, if they fire you, generally they need to give you 3 reprimands (which you don't sign) and 30 days notice as stipulated in the contract, and by law. If they don't do this, and the government gets involved, they look terrible. If you quit, it's all YOUR fault. No never quit! Make them fire you. That's WHY they harass foreigners out at the 9 month mark to save money. If you fall for it, quit and run off, they win and keep your cash or likely get government sympathy. You stand firm and ignore their harassment, laugh in their face and force them to fire you, you win and THEY broke the contract.
🦆 A dirty trick. You make them aware, that if they are setting the stage to fire you, you are going to sit around and be the LAZIEST most uncooperative employee they have ever seen, and still have to pay you for the next 30 days, OR they can release you now, and simply pay you what you earned, rent deposit refund etc, and you willingly leave quietly as soon as possible. I did this before, and they agreed. Negotiate! You take the mask off their whole strategy. They'd prefer to harass you out of a job, and hope you run away, but when you tell them you're on to it, and you are going to stay, be a nuisance and still get paid, then file complaints if you don't, they'll just pay you to get rid you. You are now almost totally ungovernable. No threats of Letter of Release, good job recommendation, passive-aggressive behavior will be effective. You'll ignore their complaints, teach classes how you want, put your feet up on your desk and doze off in your free time, and there is nothing they can do about it. In this strict face-saving culture, do you think they want you to openly insult and undermine their authority in front of the staff, parents, and children? I'll bet they don't. They don't want these daily confrontations in which they can't win. Best to kick you out the door with whatever you are asking to save-face rather than deal with an anarchist.
🦆 A dirty trick II. You tell them, once you are safely out of the country, you are going to send an email (that you had access to) to all of the parents detailing how bad of a company it is. You'll have it translated in Korean back home, and they can just TRY to sue for defamation in a foreign court, losing a ton of money in the process. Then you'll post a Youtube video telling the world all about it. They may have strict defamation laws, but in a Western country, they are invalid, freedom of speech laws apply and are extremely powerful.
🦆 They'll call the police. "Ok, great, I'll wait here for them." Calmly stand there and record the whole thing on your phone. Why run away? You look guilty. Stay there, talk to them. "We will tell them you molested kids unless you run away and leave us all your money!" "Ok, I'll just stay here to defend myself, AND you are going to pay me anyway. Even pedophiles are lawfully owed their salary. You ain't gettin' it!" Good thing you recorded that on your phone to exonerate yourself right? RIGHT!? You did take my advice to record everything didn't you? You better! There are no innocent or off-the-record meetings, you record and bring a foreigner with you as a witness, they often have a fellow Korean in the meeting, why can't you?
If the Hagwon suddenly has details that you touched a child and threatens to call the police, you know it's fraud. For one thing, wouldn't a parent take their child to the police station right away, then they would come and arrest you without notice? Why would the Hagwon know about this and have any determining factor about it? They make it sound like they have a special secret and can choose to prosecute or not based on how fast you can get to the airport. And besides, what child and family would support a lie to the police and all the way through the court system knowing they are committing perjury? If you fled the country, and you actually were guilty, you could be extradited back anyway. It's all a very common Hagwon lie to save some money.
-------------------------------------------------
🦆 Don't you see the monstrous trap they are setting you up for? In any situation, whether it's some financial deal like an investment, a relationship, a job, a proposition, a contract, an agreement, a group tour somewhere, the most important question you should have from the start is, "How can I get out of it if it goes south?" Always remember:
Some background on the Bellagraph Nova Group
Obligatory introduction
After the much-publicized failure of the takeover attempted by the Saudi Public Investment Fund in a consortium with Amanda Staveley and the Reuben brothers, we're still owned by His Lardship Michael James Wallace Ashley. A certain Henry Mauriss, CEO of Clear TV, popped up in some news, but the only piece of news I could find about the company was that the CFO mentioned in the Bloomberg profile of the company was suing said company. Apparently Mauriss himself was investigated by the FBI, something which I couldn't confirm.
His Lardship, however, is still in financial dire straits. His already underperforming retail properties have been obviously ravaged by the confinement and later by measures to reduce footfall. Last year he postponed the presentation of the accounts of Frasers Group (the new name for his Sports Direct empire) for a second year in a row. Given that he's still a keen seller and already had accepted the sale to the PIF, it's obvious that the club is for sale, provided that the PL doesn't obstruct it again with no explanations.
Apparently a new buyer has made their intentions public. The group is the Bellagraph Nova Group. The question for the discerning takeover watcher is, of course, are these guys for real? Are #cans a possibility? #Yeswecans? (this is a surprise tool that we will use later). The answer is something that is not for me to know, but I just want to provide you all of what I can find in a couple of searches because the Toon in Reddit is a wonderful place to be.
If I am to research on the Bellagraph Nova Group I'll start with the website. Sure thing, they have one! Sure, let's start reading on it and maybe we know what they do.
Bellagraph Nova Group is a leading player on the world stage. The economic and ethical model of the BN Group guarantees a significant impact on global economic and social development.
Sure, sure, but what do they do?
BN is the only group in the world to boast an international presence in all major commercial sectors: healthcare and medical specialty, financial services and investment, luxury and real estate, discretionary consumers, products & services, lifestyle, entertainment, technology and media.
Ok, so they're a conglomerate. 31 "entities", 12 billion in revenues, 23,000 employees. Any idea of what these "entities" are?
A leader in six different main sectors, our Group counts more than 23,000 employees and 31 prestigious Entities operating in all countries around the world.
Nope.
Red Flag: if you are so proud of your Entities and their Employees, you could at least name them!
Given that they don't tell us what they do, maybe we can know who they even are? Yes, we can! They are present in the most heavily retouched picture I've ever witnessed in my life. The gentlemen are Terence (L) and Nelson (R) Loh, and the lady is Evangeline Shen. The three appear as co-founders, while she also figures as CEO.
So, if you keep scrolling downward on the site, can we spot the famous man? Yes we can! Apparently these three managed to meet Barack Obama! For what, is the question? We'll come to that later, or maybe not.
First of all, the press releases portion of the corporate website gives us some more insight. The first entry is from the 15th of June, and it's a merger announcement with the DORR Group of Companies. By itself, that's not too enlightening at first, but then I found a Wikipedia article about a Novena Global Lifecare group, which is a goldmine:
Novena Global Lifecare Group was founded in 2010 by cousins Terence Loh and Nelson Loh, both former investment bankers at J.P. Morgan. Nelson found the idea of forming a medical aesthetic group when he found that his mother’s medical aesthetic bills running into thousands of dollars. One of their early investments was a KOSDAQ-listed medical equipment manufacturer in South Korea to develop their own research and manufacturing arm of the group. They also took interests in healthcare companies in Taiwan as well as the PPP chain of clinics in Singapore, renaming it to NOVU and NOVU Genesis. Prior to founding Novena Global, Terence and Nelson co-founded DORR Group, an Asia-based private equity group which invested in the consumer, internet, media and healthcare spaces.
So, the Nohs are Singaporean cousins, the family is obscenely rich if Momma Noh can rack up thousands of dollars in her beauty sleep, and they used used to work for JP Morgan before founding this DORR thing. There's also a very kind (to them) and informative profile which also gives us some more information: Nelson is now 40, and Terence is 42. They love gambling, DORR's name comes from Ocean's 11, and Novena actually makes money on a real thing (cosmetic healthcare for Asian customers).
That's all right for the cousins (for now), but who is Evangeline Shen? She's the founder of Bellagraph, the other part of the conglomerate. According to the press release on the merger, that group has investments in jewelry, and
is most notably famed for holding the world record for highest ever online single sale transaction of US$102 million (across all product categories globally)
Shen graduated from a Chinese university, but I can't ascertain the nationality she has and I am unable to find anything on her family. I'm pretty sure that someone in China would be able to unearth more juice out of her story, because the way it's told right now it seems like she's sprung from Zeus's skull like Athena.
The press release mentions that they're getting the group headquartered in Place Vendôme, no.10 in Paris. Just for reference, real estate in that place is valued at more than €14000 per square meter.
The question that has been building up during this whole writing is clear: apparently these three have the money, but what is the plan that 3 Singaporean millionaires whose empire is built around cosmetic healthcare and jewelry, who have just got an office in one of the swankiest places on earth, have for Newcastle United Football Club? There are no apparent synergies, the club is decidedly unglamorous, and they seem to have zero experience on managing sports clubs. Singaporean millionaires from outer space like Peter Lim seldom work out well, as Valencia is now experiencing.
TL;DR these three are Singaporean toffs and why they'd be interested in the club is unclear, although they're politically uncontroversial. I don't foresee any #cans.
